There's a great article in the latest issue of the IEEE (Institute of Electical and Electronic Engineers) magaine Spectrum. At first I thought it was only in the print issue, but Wingz helpfully pointed out that it is also available online to non-Spectrum subscribers.

The article is: The Amazing Vanishing Transistor Act

The article discussed dual-gate transistors (AMD, Fujitsu, IBM), tri-gate transistors (Intel), and other future directions like strained silicon (IBM, Intel), SOI (IBM, AMD) like high dielectric oxides (everyone).

nice article, but is the transistor the end-all-be-all of circuits for the years to come...

it's a comment my transport phen. prof made, and i somewhat agree with, he's also the head of the EE\CpE dept. not much has changed for a while...

What do you propose as a replacement? And in what timeframe? :)

You're talking to Mday there PM. He's an infamous Lifer trying to get back up to the top 10 posters list. The transisitor he would propose would probably be the NEF transistor.

The Net Effect Forum or NEF transistor operates very similarly to the standard silicon transistor we've all come to know and love. One poster posts on the forums, lets call him the Base. He stirs up some bias in the forum portion of the transistor causing lurkers C and E lets call them Collector and Emitter, with some post regarding racism or some other such hot topic that causes bias.

The Collector and Emitter having been stirred up start arguing back and forth and this is in effect the short between the two which causes the NEF transistor to be in the on state.

Try to stuff 50 million vacuum tubes into a chip. ;)

You can do anything with a transistor. Like XOR gates.

while that is funny, not to relevant to this conversation. And mday does actually have soem smarts to him if would bother talking with him for a bit.

What concerns me has the transistor densisty goes up, power consumption and heat has gone up has well. How long before we need water cooling has a standard cooling for our pc.

i have come to the conclusion that the transistor is a "simple machine." technically, the pn juntion is the machine. just like the wheel, lever, pully etc... just for electronics. it's as basic as it can get, you can make it smaller, but it will function the same. no need to reinvent the wheel... if you will.
