The future of the nVidia 6800 AGP cards

Like a lot of people here I got a 6800GT when they came out and I am wondering, what will happen when I decide I want a new motherboard in a year or so? Will I still be able to find a high end board w/ an AGP slot so I can still use my card? Will here be AGP to PCI-Express adapters? What does the future hold?

It's a good question. I don't understand why the industry is moving to PCI-Express when even the best video cards don't use all of AGP's bandwith. Hopefully there will be some kind of adapter or maybe boards that support both AGP and PCI-Express.

Don't worry about it.

nVidia and ATI will continue to make AGP cards for quite awhile..

They wouldn't just alienate everyone and go directly to PCI Expres..

a lot of new motherboards will have options where you can either get dual pci express (and utilize SLI) or get one pci-e and one agp (so you can choose your own type of video card)

really? where did you hear that mobos will include both interfaces?

intel has one or is making one that supports either pci-e or agp. like amol said about the dual pci-e for SLI, i'm sure its only a matter of time until they make one with agp.

That board doesnt have an AGP slot, was that link to prove they dont make boards w/ both?

I hope they make boards w/ both for a while...i guess time will tell.

The board has a G.E.A.R. slot, which i think can be used for AGP cards. It says it in one of the customer reviews.

Where does it say Intel chipsets support PCI-E and AGP slots on one board??? Via is doing this, not Intel though. Though Gigabyte designed a way to convert 1 PCI slot into an AGP, abeit it only runs at PCI speed, so it has a performance drop.

remember, people will be using agp for MANY years to come. video card makers and mobo makers don't only cater to the enthusiast crowd. they will continue to make agp video cards and mobos as long as people continue to buy them.

true. but nvidia is certainly pushing for pci-express adoptation along with intel. nvidia's next series of cards, 6600's will launch in pci-express first. intel jumped the wagon also when they introduced the 915 and 925 chipsets with pci-express slots.
