Sad. Think of all the sacrifice the US made after WWII to rebuild and defend Europe against the external and internal threat of communism and dictatorship.

Mr Michel added: "When one has to take a slap in the face such as the insulting remarks... by Mr Rumsfeld who comes to teach a thing or two to 'old Europe' - the Europe of democratic values, humanist Europe, the Europe of the Age of Enlightenment - personally I find that this hurts."

Without the US, I doubt very much the Europeans would had enjoy freedom and prosperity as they are now.

I have very high concerns when any person describes themselves as "enlightened".

Man, these are our allies and Bush has pissed them off to this extent. That's the tragedy.

That's not how they see it. And we should not be risking losing their friendship. A little tact goes further than calling your friends bad names.

If NATO lets a third world dictator like Saddam Hussein destroy it, then how can it respond to future threats? Thank god the Soviets never invaded Europe, Germany and France would had talked while Soviet armor paraded through Paris.

Are you and Eakers taking the same political science classes?

NATO has outlived its mission. It should be disbanded.
I know the EU was talking of creating their own security force, this is their chance!

Besides, do you really think NATO will survive the "Night of The Long Knives" that will happen when we find ALL THAT DOCUMENTATION that spells out the illegal sales from Germany and France?

Russia has entirely different motives, they can't stand to lose the money that would come with a regime change.

Exactly! I don't know much history, and maybe I have been subjected to propaganda in school, but I don't know why every country hates the US. I know the US has done some horrible things, but so have many European countries. The US does seem to have done numerous things to help other countries. Doesn't the US drop humanitarian aide in countries and have Marshal-plan-like plans to help other countries. The Africans seem like the only innocent people. They seemed to only fight for their own freedom. They only took what they needed, not spread out and conquered and enslaved people. It makes me sad to hear about things like the Trail of Tears, but I'm sure that other countries have carried out similar operations. I know my views might be rather naive, but is there even the least bit of truth in what I say? Also, why is Canada always the center of ridicule?
