Wow !

Accidentally ran into this and if true, it is beyond concerning.
Basically, MS doesnt care about the private home user that much anymore. They essentially are considered an information source. Also, seems like the whole thing is turning into a potential privacy & data theft minefield (eg, so many things planned to be monitored via the networks and stored on somebody else's server(s)).

Recommend viewing the YouTube below. I started it around the 2/3 point so you'll get the major point(s), but really recommend listening to the whole thing.

This has been old news for years.

And, it isn't just Microsoft, it is all manufacturers of devices containing electronics. At least Microsoft is mostly upfront about their intentions to royally screw over their user base.

Look at BMW filing for patents on special screws so they can prevent owners from working on their own cars.

Heck, I was watching a video the other day by a guy that recently bought a new Bosch 500 dishwasher. He got it home and installed it, only to find that a number of the basic wash cycles are locked behind a mobile phone app that requires the owner to establish an online account and the dishwasher to have an active wifi connection.

So, you have to have an online account just to use your Bosch dishwasher to its full advertised capabilities. All so Bosch has the freedom to datamine your arse at will about how you use it. And, it also gives them control over how long you can use your dishwasher. Once they decide you have owned it long enough, I guess Bosch can just shut down the servers (ala Google Nest) to force you to buy another one whether you need it or not.

We truly live in the age of "greed is good", sponsored by all the governments that don't have the balls to stop it from happening.

Other distros are available.

Ya, Im working on it.
Practising on Vanilla-Dpup which is Debian based.

Actually, the only thing I need windows for is TurboTax.
However, the handwriting is clearly on the wall in that eventually home users will sucumb to using the on line version simply to avoid having to replace trheir computer every couple years to be able to run TTX locally.

Really, really have misgivings though when thinking about leaving my sensitive personal & financial info on someone else's server.

UGH ....

This is probably the best thing that's happened to 'nix since... forever, though I'm very productive using the decades worth of windows apps I've accumulated, yet won't be running Win11, or 'nix on my primary use system any year soon, but 'nix is certainly both worthwhile and capable for my internet kiosk purpose systems once browser support runs out for the legacy windows versions they'll be running instead of Win11.

If you can't use the online version of Turbotax, just set up a Windows virtual machine under your Linux distro of choice using Virtualbox or Vmware Workstation Pro (both of which are free for personal use) solely just to use for running Turbotax.

I did that for years back when I had to use Turbotax Premium before I retired. It is easy to do, and it works absolutely fine.

Right, but is there a real alternative for BFUs? The majority of people will simply upgrade to newer and newer Windows anyway, so what's the point?
