The future of DVD Burners

Hello,

I recently assembled a new system for myself, but the one thing I didn't get is a DVD-Burner. I didn't get it because 8X drives are still fairly new, I wasn't sure if prices would be going down more, and I wasn't sure what the future of DVD-burners was. Does anyone know:

When are 12x and 16x burners coming out?

When are dual-layer-capable burners coming out?

When either of these things come out, will 8x drive prices go down right away, or not until a few months later?

Whats up with media? 8x media is still hard to find, and when found quite pricey. Will dual-layer media not even be available at a reasonable price until dual-layer drives have been out for a year?

Lastly, would you recommend just getting an 8x drive now, or waiting for one of these new types of burners or a price reduction on the 8xs?

Discuss. :)

DVD burners will top out at 16X, anything faster will result in media unstability which can results in shattering. That is the speed limit of our current DVD medias

DVD burners that support 12x DVD+R will be announced at Cebit (LG has already announced one and for example Plextor is rumoured to do the same). Also dual layer DVD+R writers will be announced at Cebit (Philips has already announced one model).
Drives should show up on the market in late spring or summer.

Belzer, what is Cebit?

So when these 16x and/or dual-layer drives come out in late spring or summer, would they be worth buying, or is it always good to wait a few generations for new burning technology?

There is the Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD war emerging.
Here is some news on sony's new blu-ray recorder going on sale soon. 23GB sure does look good.

Here , under section 3.13, is a chart that shows some emerging formats.

Personally, I wouldn't buy anything like this because the prices will be outragous, but so were CD-R burners when they first came out. I am still waiting for the ~100GB holographic CDs that are sitting in research labs!

We need at least a 25GB discs to record a 2hr HD broadcast. It's good to know that 25GB and 27GB Blu-Ray discs could be avaiable. 100GB discs would be nothing short of AWESOME!

Yeah, what ever happened to those Illuminous disks that were supposed to hold a large amount of data even before DVD Burners came out??? Was it 100GBs they would hold??

bump...i was wondering the exact same thing...now you can get a 8x burner for around ~75 after rebates, but i didn't know if it would be better just to wait until the dual layer ones became available..

wait for x12
wait forl x12 reasonably priced
wait for dual layer
wait fo rdual layer reasonably priced
wait for x16
wait for blu ray
wait for....

If a x8 fits what you need, just get a x8 speed now. prices will keep going down steadily.

I got the impression from reading the news bit, that dual drive means DVD+R and DVD-R, not dual layer.

Will dual layer burnt DVDs be compatiable with today's DVD rom drives and players?

I want to back up my movies (for legal purposes like I do with my CDs) but don't want to be not able to play them on my TV.

I would go for a DVD burner now but it just seems silly to buy a burner now if the dual layer ones will make them obsolete in only a few months.

With a cd burner it was easy. A cd is a cd. But with DVD burners they couldnt even reach a standard ( + vs -) before they came out with a whole new format!!

I would hope so. Commercial DVD's are dual layer already.

Pioneer's news says that first dual layer burner (model 109) will be presented in december 2004 and of course it will cost at least 300? (and for 1 empty DVD 10?).

So i think buying a single layer now doesn't mean to waste money, if you consider that in 10 months you can burn at least (considering 1 per week) 40 DVD, 450 GB! it's enough , isn't it ?

There are standard wars, and then there is being stupid.

DVD is a standard. DVD-R can be read by everything that can read standard DVDs. DVD+R was a funky twist on all of that and it can't be read by everything.

I don't even know why DVD+r survives.. there is no need for it and it just causes headaches.
