Refrigerator? Perry hospitalized in SC 3 hours, 36 minutes ago

AIKEN, S.C. (AP)?Former Chicago Bears defensive lineman William ?The Refrigerator? Perry remains hospitalized in South Carolina. Aiken Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Melissa Summer said Wednesday that Perry is in serious condition. The 46-year-old Perry has been hospitalized to deal with complications from Guillain-Barre (gee-LAN? bah-RAY?) Syndrome, a chronic inflammation disorder of the peripheral nerves. Perry?s nephew, Purnell Perry, said Tuesday that his uncle was admitted more than a week ago but was expected to recover. A man who answered the phone Wednesday at Purnell Perry?s home in Aiken said he couldn?t comment on the football player?s hospitalization. The 300-pound plus defensive tackle played for the Bears? 1985 Super Bowl team, and helped lead Clemson to the 1981 national championship.

G-B leads to a kind of gradual paralysis. It is most often associated with flu shots, but is overall a rare event.

If not caught early, the paralysis leads to death.

Peripheral nerves as opposed to central nervous system (brain/spinal cord). So a lot of places, but you generally see it in the legs first, with weakness and loss of sensation, then up to the arms, face, etc.

With treatment, most people recover from it.

Yeah, according to wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillain-Barre
With prompt treatment by plasmapheresis or intravenous immunoglobulins and supportive care, the majority of patients will regain full functional capacity. However, death may occur if severe pulmonary complications and dysautonomia are present

Most often associated w/ c. jejuni infection actually.

I think the risk w/ the modern version flu shot is basically none at this point.

I'm the rookie.
I may be large, but I'm no dumb cookie.
You've seen me hit, you've seen me run,
When I kick and pass, we'll have more fun.
I can dance, you will see
The others, they all learn from me.
I don't come here lookin' for trouble,
I just came here to do
The Super Bowl Shuffle. "

Watching that vid again made me remember what a killer talented team that was.

We (Eagles) had Jim McMahon at QB a few years later and we loved him. Not a superstar but always a warrior, and with style.

We also had the Fridge at the very end of his career, when all he had left was being an immovable object.

Tough news.
