Paypal's LOOSING everyones business w/ their newest policy(s). I am DEFINITELLY looking for an alternate method of collecting/sending $$. Have had a "nice" balance there for the last year but since their LATEST policy implementation withdrewed it all and planning to kiss em goodbye. They made plenty of $$ from me in a year (over 5k transactions and balance) so the HE$# w/ em :)

Anyone has have any experience w/ any of these services? Looking for a good alternative.

Thanks for the links and info. I will definately be investigating these. PayUsedToBeMyPal will be hard to replace for the name recognition, but not impossible.

Big thank you for the information. I was looking for an alternative.

Great Post.

Yeah, paymentalt.com looks flakey to me too. Real cheap site. I don't think they are legit.

it takes 10 business days to withdraw money (by direct deposit) from payplace. that's way too long IMHO.

see their's more to paypal's success than just the free $5. For example, they have become the de facto method of transferring money on e-bay despite e-bay's attempt to get people to use their own payment methods. Paypal would also automatically insert a banner in an e-bay ad for a user given a person's e-bay user id and password, and since a person could get $5 for every person they got to sign up those banners sprung up everywhere which is probably why it took over e-bay by storm. getting people away from paypal is not going to be easy :( and paypal knows it

A little addition:
Some companies pay you to signup (and sometimes to send your first transaction), i.e. ExchangePath pays you 10 bucks after you register and send at least 1 penny to someone....use a WebCert! You can then have them deposit your *earnings* back into ur wc! =)

toyfiend ...

Yes, ecount and WebCertificate belong to the same parent company. From ecount's web site:::

"The C/Base E-Commerce Group was recently renamed Ecount, Inc. and its portfolio of products includes ecount.com, Webcertificate.com and others coming soon."

And, yes, ecount is good, although they used to be better. Originally, ecount did **not** charge those niggling $1 fees (credit card transfers, etc.). But their fees now seem to parallel those of Webcertificate.
(Frankly, it's now hard to see the difference between ecount and WebCert. and why the same parent company needs 2, virtually-identical services. Does anyone see differences?)

Returning to the complement ... we've found ecount's customer service to be extraordinary. For example, when ecount "rejected" a charge, ecount called the merchant and resolved it for us.

-----------------------------
A horror story (useful object-lesson I hope...)

Potential "gotchas" when using ecount/WebCertificate/etc. when buying from Mercata, MobShop, etc.
-----------------------------

We, like many people use ecount/WebCertificate/etc. to ensure merchants can't charge more than we agree to pay. To ensure this, we keep only enough $$$ in our account to pay for what we're buying at that moment.

That strategy is fine if you're buying things with static prices.

But, if you buy from Mercata, MobShop, etc., the price **hopefully changes** (goes down). The problem is that when you 1st place an order, these companies "authorize the amount" -- hit your account to see if you have $$$ to pay for what you've ordered. Authorizations are NOT charges, but they **tie up your money**, sometimes for 2-6 days. So, if the "buying cycle" ends in 1-2 days, and Mercata, MobShop, etc. then **charge** your account, you may have NO $$$ available -- the "authorization" 1-2 days earlier tied up your $$$, and your order gets rejected.

For example, we bought a $150 item from Mercata using an ecount (we had $175 in the account). But when the "powerbuy" ended, our order was rejected -- because Mercata's "authorization" tied up most of the $$$ and when they tried to "charge" our account, there were insufficient funds. ECount resolved the problem for us and our order went through -- great service.)

--------------- (end of object lesson -- hope the rant helps)

ive used ecount and it is EXCELLENT. You can avoid the $1 fee for sending a check if you just use their ATM Mastercard to buy stuff with (spend the money in your ecount that way!)

This is a smart idea, they make money from merchants you use the mastercard at instead of charging you...or you can ALWAYS GO TO AN ATM AND GET THE MONEY IN YOUR ECOUNT OUT INSTANTLY!!! Forget about waiting for bank transfers or checks (they charge the same $1 fee)

I know PayPal didn't support Canadians. Anyone know if any of these surfaces support Canadian > US transfers or even Canadian > Canadian transfers. Or is there even just a dedicated Canadian surface?

i know ecount has billed me as a purchase, but I think they all have a disclaimer that your credit card company may treat it as a cash advance...I have seen instances where some credit card companies charge cash advance fees for online gambling sites, its really more up to your credit card company than the payment services...

they all "run them through" as purchases-your cc company may elect to treat them differently. One thing I did with my AMEX card was called them and told them NEVER to authorize ANY cash advances...that way theres no worry, since I never got cash advances anyways and theres a lil more security protection...

from a personal experience those companies bill your credit card as a purchase and never as a cash advance. I dont think they'll have any customers if they charge you as a cash advance. :)

Slaman, i haven't tried ecount yet, but webcert works for Canadian now... so i imagine Ecount will also. I'll check in a couple of hours after my exam and let you know.

I'll stick with Paypal. It's nice and reliable. Why replace something that isn't broken?

One thing to check with these credit-card payment places is
whether they allow chargebacks...I like PayPal because I don't have
to worry about chargebacks--they don't allow them. (Well, maybe in the
case of fraud, but that isn't of concern to me).

Other payment places, like BillPay (or whatever that one that e*Bay
pushes is called) allow Chargebacks. So someone can decide they
don't want to pay, dispute the charge and your payment can get
tied up...defeating the whole purpose of these places for me. I
want the money, free and clear, so I can send the merchandise without
worry of fraud/whatever.
