Am I correct in assuming that rather than the database being on particular drive in a particular server, it's now on an unknown drive in an unknown server? Or do I not understand what the cloud is?

Probably something like this. I just wonder how much storage this forums needs and what the bandwidth is (hopefully unlimited).

The FBI, HLS, and CIA now maintains the hardware. The Data is as safe as can be!

I had been outside bow hunting all afternoon. I moved in very quietly to one of my favorite spots. After 2 hours, I realized that there was another guy hunting on my property, about 20 yards from me. He was facing away from the direction I came in from, and was very well camouflaged (and on the opposite side of a tree.) Ditto me. AFAIK, he never knew I was there.

If he is on your property without permission; his kills belong to you.

Fire one across his bow as a warning! The next shot is a kill shot.

Looks like "the cloud" transition didn't help at all. 10:53 pm - 9:14 am (10 hrs 21 min) downtime for maintenance. D:

semi-permission. When I purchased my house and land, there was a tree stand in the back corner. My wife complained about it to me, but I know how hard it is to find a nice spot & what a pain in the ass it is when the property is sold to someone else. I came across the guy and his wife last year about half an hour before dusk; it had been their son's stand. I chatted for a few minutes & said good luck & left the area. I was only about 100 yards away when I heard the shot. The guy's wife got her first deer ever. I found out that she was the one who got it & that it was her first when a strange car pulled up a couple days later. They brought me a bag with the tenderloins already marinated, and a six-pack of beer. "Hey, any time."

Tech forums always have the most problems.

Also, I didn't even notice they were down, Skyrim!

I don't understand how this can't be done in a more or less seamless fashion. Setup a mysqldump and then a scp script to move the db to the new server, execute it live to get a feel of how big the file will be and how long it will take and restore on new server just to test. All this while forums are still running. Mark forums as read only with notice that it's being moved, perform another mysqldump with database lock (may be easier to take it down to guarantee atomicity) and then scp to new server, have config file open and ready to change the config to new server. When transfer completes restore it to mysql then change config over, if forums were marked read only before the dump, then change it back after restoring the db to new server. Boom. Half an hour at most? Less? Datacenter to datacenter transfers normally are pretty quick.

Not that I care, but just seems like a good practice to take, especially for a tech forum. :p
