of my house really needs to figure out he doesn't live there anymore. Its been over a year but I just got what I assume is his tax refund. (Or at least a letter from the IRS that said "Get your tax refund faster next year" on the outside). Had some contacts from 1800 contacts delivered last month. Finally got his previous HOA to stop sending late payment and lien notifications to my address and had to confirm they were talking about his old old address and not my current address. (Envelopes had "LIEN NOTICE" in large letters on the outside) Got a scholarship check for a SE michigan college in September...

Spammy stuff I can understand but this is some important shit he keeps sending my way

Put all that stuff in a box and send it to him. Make sure to include a note that could be summarized as "fix your shit, bro" as well as an opened three pound bag of glitter.

My house used to be a rental property and so even up to 5 years after we moved in, we still got people's [junk] mail, like 4 different last names.

I wonder if filling out a USPS move form for that person will globally re-route their mail based on name alone.

Never got his new address. Asked his realtor twice for it but never got it. I've tried writing MLNA and RTS - No such person at this address but hasn't helped yet

I'd try the USPS change of address form, and then throw away anything that comes afterwards. You are making it easy for him to be lazy...spare the rod, etc.

I still get mail at my address for other people, including warning letters from NYS Department of Taxation and Finance for a roommate who moved out 4 years ago. I just cross out the address, write "return to sender, does not live here" (or some variation) on the outside, and drop it in a blue bin.

Too often law enforcement use tactics like this to get people served. The letter will read: Your tax refund can be picked up at XYZ street. When you come in, they either serve or arrest you. Most people will fall for this.

Or, just write on the envelope: Moved, return to sender. And your done with it.

We lived in our last house for 13 years. We always got mail addressed to the previous owners. We've been in this house over 3 years...and, yep, you guessed it, we still get mail addressed to the previous owner.

It's kind of like socks going missing in the dryer. No one knows for sure WHY it happens...it just does.

Then I guess I'm just a scofflaw...I throw the crap addressed to previous owners away.
I use it to start fires in the wood stove when needed.

If you cannot take care of your responsibilities it's not my problem.

The previous owner of this house had a major stroke and is in a care facility...I doubt he cares about any of it anymore...(and none of it is in the least bit important mail)

I shred everything that shows up to my place with MY personal info on it.

I toss anything that I get from previous occupant into recycling bin completely intact.

I've had court cops show up on my door looking for the guys that sold me the house. I think it was 4 years after I bought it.

Meh, I just toss it in the trash. If he wants his mail, he'll do a change of address.

We bought a condo in FL in mid 2014 and early this year during our snowbird stay we were still getting mail from financial institutions, the IRS, and the Social Security administration for the previous owners. The pisser is that they purchased another home in the area and had moved out 18 months prior to our purchase.

Some people just have their heads wedged permanently up their asses. Their mail when delivered just 'disappears' and if I'm ever asked I'll do my Sgt. Schultz routine.

My understanding is that has been viewed by some judges as illegal as it relates to 18 U.S. Code § 1702

https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1702

I appreciate your diligence, but you are over thinking this.

That statute is about stolen mail. This is abandoned mail, from a person who has no contact with you nor has taken responsibility to file a simple form...find me a case where someone has been taken to court over that.

I have been living in my current house for 19 years. I still get collections notices at least twice a week for the former owners and I get calls from collection agencies every day. Every god damned day. For 19 years. As soon as I call to notify the agency that the owners are no longer living here that account simply gets transferred to a new agent or agency and I get called from a new number the next day. If I ever meet the people that lived here I'm gonna Negan them. I am convinced those people are still using my address for credit reasons.

I have learned however that if you ever get in serious debt issues the best course of action is to simply ignore it as long as possible. That $20,000 credit card bill can be settled for $4,000 if you just let it ride for seven or eight years.

The forwarding only lasts for 6 months if I remember correctly.
Yeah, I dunno what it is in the US, but the longest in Canada is 1 year I believe.

About 3 years after I moved in I got what looked to be a cheque in an official looking envelope. So I decided to contact the previous owner. She was grateful I did, because it turned out to be a royalties cheque or something like that. Apparently they were only issued like once every 5 years or so and she had forgotten about this particular company.

Other mail I just threw in the trash though at least if it looked like junk mail.
