The Forgotten Droid . . . Eris

Bateluer

Anyone pick up the Eris? I looked at it before I bought the Moto Droid, but the lack of physical keyboard was a deal breaker for me. Still, its a smooth sleek device. Not as powerful as the Moto Droid but still a nice device.

I am curious to hear as well. $100 less is rather attractive. Although the phone in general will be more attractive when it gets the 2.0 update.

The lack of awesome hardware like the Moto Droid was the deal breaker for me. The lower cost is awesome, but it's basically the same as the other Android phones that have been on the market. Sense UI is awesome and I wish it was on my Moto Droid, however I am able to get out of Open Home a good amount of flair (home replacement app).

The hardware capabilities and Android 2 had me sold, couldn't tell myself to save money by abandoning those features. Well worth it too, the integration of information for contacts is absolutely amazing.

Is it confirmed that its going to get the 2.0 update? Since its basically an HTC Hero with a different name and case design, it can probably run Cyan's rom, yes?

When you're buying something with a data plan, the cost of the device is small compared to what you're paying every month. Even with the cheapest voice/data plan, you're paying $70/month. That's $1680 over two years - compare that with an extra $100 to have a more powerful device.

Some people don't need the power and features of the Moto Droid. The Eris still looks like a very capable device, though the data plans will probably limit its appeal.

yeah i saw this phone at a VZ store today, that is too bad about the OS, i will look again when it is updated..

While there is some truth to this, it only applies to certain situations. If you already had a data plan - and you were going to have one regardless of new phone, then the price of the phone is really all that matters.

i figure i am already paying 70/mo or whatever, i go through phones pretty often, and for some reason it seems like tax is particularly heavy on phones, i want to pay as little as possible, i don't want to take it up the butt twice or three times when once is enough..

I have the Eris, and I have to say it's a HUGE improvement over my Touch Pro1. I love it. The virtual keyboard actually suits me better (YMMV.) But the physical kb on the TP made me stretch too far. Yes I have have small hands. I went in with the intention of getting a TP2, or Droid, but fell in love with the little Eris. I didn't like the feel of the Droid, they need to work on the edges a bit for my tastes.

The Eris will get the update once HTC finishes coding HTC Sense 2.0. Who knows when that will be. I just worry that the Eris' processor/memory will be enough to support it being that it can already be sluggish at times.

I'm holding out for the HTC Passion.
