The answer is to go dock and disembark in the cruise's home nation and let them deal with it. I'm not willing to sacrifice the lives of American doctors and nurses because thousands of people with money thought they were special snowflakes who could play with peoples' lives by congregating together in huge numbers during a pandemic without repercussion.
I think I found out why all cruise liners are registered in the Bahamas,
"This means they register in another country and adopt a flag of convenience, and in the cruise industry the preferred flag is that of the Bahamas. Among other advantages, the Bahamas does not impose any tax on income. Any profit the cruise line makes is untaxed, neither is there any tax on capital gain if a vessel is sold at a profit. "
So the lines biffed the entire tax system you and I have to pay into every week, off to the Bahamas then, I'm sure their medical community will accept the "leper ships".

True, but the trouble with the cruise ship trying to dock in CA went back to early March, the handwriting was then on the wall. These vessels do not have a separate HVAC unit for every cabin so any issue with a virus transmittable as an aresole is going to be problematic.

There are only two ships at sea with passengers that had embarkation dates in March. Those were March 5 and 7. Which is slightly before the Grand Princess debacle.

95% of ships out there with passengers had embarkations far before March. Many of them were on 30-100 day cruises. The cruise lines have been trying to get all ships with passengers on them into ports since March 11.

Everyone one brings up tax and labor status of the cruise industry. Well fuck why aren’t we saying the same thing about every fucking multinational company that does all sorts of fancy accounting and offshores labor to poor countries? It’s almost every tech company, every apparel, most home goods, every company that uses China and Asia for labor, etc. Fuck how many major US companies actually paid taxes in the US? Here’s a clue not many.

That is true, Google, Apple, Nike, Amazon are all guilty of this tactic.

Yikes, did not know that, that's a long time to be stuck in a tiny cabin under quarantine condition.

Yeah, those should be taxed too! I'm not sure why you think this is an either or proposition.

Did the Florida governor forget that Florida has "ports"
and that cruise ships commonly go to these "ports"
and that cruise ships are well known breeding grounds for "tha sickies"
and that maybe establishing triage\quarantine\whatever you want to call a self contained medical facility to handle a large influx of American citizens that need to be assessed and treated?

Asking for a friend who has a democrat for a governor and is confused why a State would not have anything in place. I don't pay a lot of attention to Florida news so I'm not sure.
You must understand that Florida has a Republican as Governor.....which I feel msorry for the residents of Florida!
As such you can expect no sympathy from the Govenor.....

I am conflicted; living here in the heart of Trump country, Brevard county, FL. We have handled the pandemic the worst of any state to this point. It is going to result in the biggest shit show too I suspect. We may pass NY with the idiocy that prevails here. What's 6 thousand more potentially infected people going to change? At least they will be treated like they are contagious. Unlike the millions that have been here for Bike Week, Spring Break, cruises, beaches, the list goes on.

On the other hand: The point about our first responders, medical workers, and essential services workers, is a good one too. These ships have been turned down by other countries, why should we take one for the team? I live just miles from Port Canaveral, and they could potentially seek haven here before it is over. I have family working in medical here, they are in my monkey sphere, the people on those boats are not. Hard to put concern for them ahead of my own people. Pouring gasoline on a fire comes to mind.

I was wondering with the Port of Canaveral being right there. I've done a lot of travel to the Cape, and stayed in the motels that are real close. Country Inn Suites comes to mind. You would check in and the place would be mobbed. Then next day, half the motel checks out. I'm like
WTF. Those people book there before the cruise and some probably after. Anyway, I was thinking Cocoa Beach could be a hot spot due to that situation.
Edit: Plus the double whammy of spring break. Use to stay at an older motel in front of the pier in Coca Beach and it was a marvelous view from there during spring break.

The Holland America ships are actually registered in the Netherlands for some insane reason, there's only a few ships registered in the US these days and they all sail the Hawaiian islands , the company that owns these is still an American one, worth a bit too....

eliminating tax havens needs to be part of the new social contract we build.

another ship in trouble it seems

The flow of info with the Navy has stopped. No more reporting (at least locally). Not surprised.

I really hate the double standard the media has had this case. They had no problem rightfully shitting on the spring breakers in Florida and at South Padre Island in Texas, but when it's old people wanting to party in a pandemic now they're the victims and it's all sob stories.

Tell the ships to sail into the port of the country of the flag they sail under.

When the cruise line beg from money, tell them to ask the country of the flag they sail under. You don't get to avoid paying taxes to the US and then ask US taxpayers to save your ass.

Of the thousands and thousands of cruise ships, less than 1% are registered in the US, and that would be none of the major players in the business.

The Grand princess was docked in Oakland and the doctors moved them to a military base and quarantined everyone. They were monitored daily and tested if they had symptoms and treated separately. All the passengers have now completed quarantine. The federal government can take over these cruise ships and move them to a military base and treat them. Once done, send the cruise company the total bill. Republicans say they are pro life but I don’t see it at all.

these are Americans that are being abandoned.
