The whole aspartame thing, oh no, 5 people in the world reportedly died from aspartame, and how many thousands from sugar?
It's called diabetes and consuming large quantities of sugar has been associated with its early onset - especially sweeteners like HFCS.
Any and all starch, or carbs, are converted into blood glucose (blood sugar). Some at an even faster pace than pure sugar.
There is a scale, The glycemic index, that puts a scale to how fast these carbs are converted into blood glucose. As you can see there are many that are much worse than sugar.
