The first ipod killer?

This was posted before I believe.

Iriver is nice but Ipod is dominating the market.

Iriver needs to have some really useful features that Ipods don't have and be cheaper to catch up.

archos was one of the first with hd-mp3 player (also recording and stuff)
the newest one has color-display and can play divx movies (but i think not all versions are supported).

so the ipod was a success mainly because of the design and has now advanced to some kind of status symbol. but there were and still are very good and cheaper alternatives to it.

I've owned two archos player and they both fell apart on me (I got an rma for one and they sent me a new but DOA one!)... My ipod has lasted me over two years.. archos may have been the first but apple surely made the best (for now)

theres a 20gig, 30 gig and a 60 gig

the 30 is 300$ the 20 250$ and the 60 is 400$

If there's a 60GB version, that's definately not iPod sized unless they use different cases for different models. 1.8" HDs are not availible past 40GB; to get 60GB, they'd have to be using something bigger, probably a 2.5" drive.

They're bigger and heavier than the ipod...

ipod - 6.2 ounces
2.4 x 4.1 x .73 inches

Zen - 7.9 oz with battery
3" x 4.4" x 0.86"
76 x 113 x 22mm

its a very small diff

Dear lord, the dang thing is nearly a tank compared to the iPod.😛 Roughly speaking, the 20GB is 86% bigger and 41% heavier than the 20GB iPod. Creative obviously is still sticking with 2.5" HD's considering the dimensions.🙁

1. It is true that the new Zen Xtra models are larger in physical size.

2. You can't dispute the SQ of the Zen's far exceed that of the iPOD. Any gen vs any gen.

3. Just ordered my 30 GB NX yesterday.

4. Nexy hot thing will be the 1.5GB HD based hard drives. Also the RIO 20GB mp3 player(s) are hot.

ill take the lil bigger size diff if im gonna save 100$ the 30 gig zen costs as much as then 20 gig Ipod and the 60 gig is cheaper then the 40 gig ipod
itll still fit in my pocket and ill have 100$ extra dollers there also

that and its made to work with the PC. the last PC ipod i used with the PC was horrid. stupid MMJB interface sucks anus. and even useing ephpod is glitchy

While I don't have a Zen to compare it to, considering that Stereophile Magazine considers it a device worthy of audiophiles, I don't see how the Zen could be much, if any better.

Ah crap. I've been waiting for the ihp-120 for ages, having decided it was the one for me. Then last week I thought 'sod it' and went out and bought an ipod...

Still, after having used the ipod for a week I'm not sad I got it - its a superb piece of kit! I would have liked the longer battery life and the radio, though. ah well.

blah.. i trust my own ears more than i do someone else's words

ive listened to them back to back many times and i must say the zen does indeed sound better

as far as the size difference goes, consider that the zen is alot more 'rugged' than the ipod... you can carry the zen as is while you should use a case with the ipod to prevent scratches/blemishes

They have never reviewed the Zen and the reviews for portables should be kept strictly separated from regular ones. I believe they rated it as a Class C component, yes Class C but only in a PORTABLE sense. My CDP is a Stereophile Class C component and there is no way the Ipod would come anywhere close. Many reviewers have said over and over again that the Zen has better SQ than the Ipod.
