Dear Anandtech Guru's,

4 weeks ago I was the proud owner of the famous superfast Asus Radeon 9800 pro 256Mb, now I am a seriously blieped off user with crap in his hands. When I first had the card all went smooth, no systemcrashes no nothing, then after 3 weeks things started to change. I could no longer play games longer than 30 minutes or my card would get seething hot. Now a week and a half later i can't substain even 10 min of gametime. I then read here and on other sites that Asus has slapped about the crappiest coolers on there that money can buy. I then tried it out with the VGA silencer, and its exactly the same, it still runs hot till my comp tilts:(:( I haven't damaged the cpu in any way since I have no artifacts garbles or whatsoever on my games, everything looks crisp and clean till it just gets waaaaaay too hot for this baby to continue its job:(:(

So I am now caught up in something of an ordeal, its clear that Asus has released a faulty product on the market but as it is, the product is in their eyes just defect and they will gladly send me a replacement that ofcourse will work the first 4-5 weeks after which I will end up in the same vicious circle:(:( What should I do to end this circle of doom?? I bought the card via a store and they do not exchange products for money but do work with RMA but we all know what that means eh, is there some way to get them to change the product for a different one, lets say instead of the crappy Asus a good sturdy Sapphire XT, supposing I pitched in another 200$? Also how do I make sure they do not see a VGA silencer has been on there, is there some way for them to tell?

Has anyone here ever been in this kind of scenario then I would love to hear about it,

thnx,

Laymen

Nah wouldn't do any good, I have 1 slotcooler, 4 speedy case fans(placed properly meaning in front suck in, at back blow out)and plenty of room around my CPU, normally my temps are around 32-40°C but now since I am the proud owner of crap my temps go to 60+ and beyond(where I have never gone before):(:(

Ask a local store or friend to test the card for you. If the problem follows the part then I'd suggest you RMA it to Asus.

* From my experience Asus is horrible with RMA's.

Also, you seem to have (4) 9800 Pro threads going, so please try to reply to an original thread w/ an update instead of creating new ones all of the time.

John is right, asus RMAs absolutly suck

however, in this case, i would take my odds. you might get lucky and get a good card

I had to RMA an Asus TI4600 Ultra Deluxe three times (maybe 4 I don't recall...) within a 2 month span. Shipping ended up costing me $6.00 each time and the time spent on the phone to their worthless RMA dept. was a joke.

my friend had a similar experience with Asus video cards. it took him 3 months to get the damn thing back and they merely sent him back his old card.

BLah blah. Card works fine then goes bad. Card had warranty end user goes and changes heatsink to supposedly fix it. Now no more warranty. Ever thought maybe it's your airflow that isn't good. Just so happens your heatsink is crappy but others with the same card have no problems.

Well Viper, the flow in my case is awesome, my idle temps are 32°C and thats as cool as a CPU can get without watercooling. My Asus ran superhot even before i put the VGA silencer on so no its not my airflow its ASUS and their crap!!!!!! I don't want to RAM, I want another card cuz Asus sucks, this forum has already shown me that. Just gotta find a way to change it without them figuring out a diff heatsink has been on;) I'm a good tinkerer so they won't notice a thing, I just hope the store goes along with my deal to pitch in an extra 200$ for a new card so they can keep their crap, they can use it for cold winters mwhahah

Hmm, I'll consider myself lucky. I just RMAd an ASUS A7M266-D and it only took 2 emails and 1 phone call. I got the replacement back 11 days after sending the bad board in.

As to the video card in question, I'd sell it at a loss on the FS/FT forums and buy another card. There are lots of modders/tinkerers who'd love a chance to raise that card from the dead. :)

Yeah, Asus RMAs suck, but they're getting better you can do it completely online now if you know where to go (helpdesk.asus.com).
