every single application launch attempt now produces the error message "The File does not have a program associated with it for completing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."

now, i've done my fair share of vista bug hunting, and i have never come across this. Seriously, it will not allow a single application to launch, save windows explorer. i can navigate to msconfig, and it gives me the same message when i try and launch it. windows+r CMD isn't even working. its really bizarre...

any suggestions?

I've actually seen this before. In that particular case, it was caused by the installation and use of a hex or resource editor. Fixing it required the uninstall of said program.

Really? thats very interesting, he does have an LC-3 editor, but it doesn't require an installation. I am also running vista and also using the LC-3 hex editor, so if mine goes haywire also, we know what the culprit is. Thanks for the info!
