From Msnbc article, this is a description.
Carnivore is a software program that lives on a Windows-compatible computer. The program was developed, in part, with off-the-shelf commercial software and proprietary code written by the FBI. Once installed on a computer, it can "sniff" or "filter" all e-mail on a particular network, via a network card. It stores evidence, captured according to criteria set by the FBI, to a removable disk.

Does that mean Carnivore is going to be a hidden file in my computer sent there to potentially entrap me at the whim of a zelous Federal juducial body?

The article I took this from is about the Feds wanting to know change the name(Presumably because of the bad press) I can't see how changing the name will make the intrusion into ones private life any more palitable.

Plus, The judical branch wants an independant review, but will not let the &quot;independant reviewers &quot; publish there findings! WTF? <img src=&quot;i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif&quot;border=0>

Well actually what I find interesting about it is they want want it immediately after the router I believe it was on the network, which mean they would in essence be able to turn the internet on and off in this country if it was installed at every isp. Flip a switch and everyone of them blocks traffic too and from the router...bummer. Likely to happen, no, but unnecessary either way.
