Sense we all are in the mood of talking politics, heres my little conspiracy theory on this matter:
The FBI is supposively the best investigative branch of the US, but cant seem to think of anything else than going through the worlds internet trying (as they say) to provent (lack of a better word(s))crime. Again this idea (like what the CIA did in Panama) will not work. There will probably be more inocent deaths involving some intercepted e-mail that some 10 year old sent because he was pissed off.
On the other hand at least the FBI is taking action aginst crime rather than killing off some (although they were crazy well atleast some of them) Americans who the FBI are swarn to protect. The FBI's "heart" is in the right place, but violating the US constitution is there way of ramming "their way" into the newly formed: USAPR(united states aginst the peoples rights)

PS-this theory was put togeather at 12am and i will probably regret saying some stuff, and some of the stuff wont even make sence, but ill get to that tomorrow.

I'm in agreement with you for the most part.

Remember the grief some of you give the NRA for calling the BATF 'Jack Booted Thugs?' Are you starting to understand now?

The FBI is trying to get a 'leg-up' on the hackers that continue to threaten the nations economy and security. When any of you download from a Warez, or use illegal software, you just feed the fires! Too often in this day and age a single file or recovered data might be the only difference between guilty or innocent.

Would you deny someone on death row the ability to be proven guilty or innocent? This goes much farther than just being able to read E-Mail!

Tom: I would have called BATF plain stupid. Jack booted thugs is a big over the edge, but I can understand why people feel that way. Waco was caused by the impatience of the federal government. Janet Reno had just come on board as Attorney General. She has said several times that she relied upon the advice of experienced FBI agents in making the decision to use the tanks at Waco. She regrets the decision, and has said so publicly. She won't make that mistake again, and probably no other administration will be so quick to endanger the lives of innocent children.

Yea Czar with all the times the

<< Bloody Americans >>

have decimated a defenseless Asian country this century I can't believe they made that request. I hate socialist bleeding hearts that start senetences with

<< those bloody Americans >>

. You should give some thought to how nice a place your north Atlantic island would be to live had it not had over 50 yrs of U.S. military economic patronage

I'm Canadian, but from what I understand about Carnivore, a strong case could be made that it's unconstitutional. And another thing: are the ISP required by law to allow it on their servers? That's just fascist.

The FBI is lying when they say the main purpose of this software is to catch terrorists and drug smugglers. Any serious criminals using the Internet for collaboration will undoubtedly make use of some type of encryption to conceal their messages. The FBI knows as well as we do that any strong 128bit encryption cannot be cracked in a timely manner by today's computers, and 256bit encryption squares the cracking time, making it essentially unbreakable. So it stands to reason that the FBI is using Carnivore to monitor email that people currently do not see fit to encrypt: personal messages, business correspondance, etc.

Not a comforting thought.

Czar: You really need to go back and check some facts. I don't want to get in the way of your anti-capitalist/America rant, but who told you that the U.S. put Fidel in power?
Please specify exactly what Asian country the United States invaded and killed everyone living there? I am surprised this little ?factoid? never made the papers in any country.
Far more evil has been perpetrated by the left (Communists) that was ever done by the right. In general, extremist forms of government (regardless of ideology), are not my cup of tea.

While I agree that Carnivore is probably not a good idea, I do disagree about criminals using encryption.

The one thing you can not underestimate about people is stupidity.
Espcially criminals. I am always shocked at how dumb some people can be. Just look at all the posts about stupid workers at CrapUSA or Circuit City. And these are people who at least are trying to learn an honest living.

I don't see any reason to think that some drug dealer is going to know what the hell PGP or any type of encryption is.
Considering criminals are stil dumb enough to communicate over the phone (despite the use of wire taps), I am sure some of them think email is already more secure!
