So I just found out that my co-worker used to work for the group that was trying to develop the field emitter display which was supposed to be the display of the future. It's interesting to hear from him why the technology never went anywhere and is now a canceled project.

The problem was, they just couldn't ever get the device to last long enough. They could make working panels, but they would burn out too quick. The plasma that is made by the field emitter is just too corrosive. The funny thing is, they had spent all this money making a multibillion dollar plant to make the things and were just hoping that the R&D dept would be able to overcome the problem with short lifetime. As it turns out, they couldn't.

Seems like they should have resolved the basic lifetime problems in the lab before they built a plant.
