Not sure why we'd need a faster jet. As I understand it, for military, jet-fighter, purposes speed is no longer considered so important, as the faster it goes the less maneuverable it is and missiles (or other unmanned craft?) are always likely to go faster than anything with a human pilot.

Got me wondering, though, why we don't have faster passenger jets, i.e. a successor to Concorde. Concorde's problem, as I remember it, was it was so noisy few big city airports would accept it.

The challenges of supersonic flight in-atmosphere have not changed.... heat buildup, seriously high rate of fuel-burn AND the inevitable noise of sonic-booms are all still big problems.

Sonic-boom noise in particular is why Concord was only able to arrive/depart from a small number of coastal AP's in America like NY's JFK.

Someone is allegedly planning to try again.

Would suck to have them for a neighbor unless they plan on only testing a significant distance offshore.

And the XR-71 Blackbird was the fastest manned, reasonably practical (barely lol) and officially put into military service jet air-craft.... that we know of at least!

However it was slow-poke compared to this bad-boy:

They figured out they could not outrun missiles (the enemy, being the SU, would eventually catch up), and spying from space was better. Hence it was killed. The end. Marvelous plane, however.
