I have noticed over the past few years that the FAA takes very few preventative measures. Although after a horrible plane crash, they snap into action figure out what caused the crash and go fix that part on every plane out there. It seems to me that unless some horrid happens, the FAA and the airline companies do little about planes that are falling apart. I think the airline companies just don't want to spend another dime on fixing something unless they are forced to do it, otherwise it would cut into their precious profits. Many times a worn down part is found during inspection but it still works to the point that the plane flies, so nothing is done about it. That is of course until a crash and then the FAA makes airline companies fix it.

Does anyone think this observation is correct?

I completely agree. Just over the summer with the crash of the Concorde, did they ever say what caused it. I know it was announced that is had just undergone a complete inspection and passed. Then they go and ground every single one of them. They found cracks in the wings, which would be common from super sonic flight, but the problem was with the engines not the wings. I first thought sabatage, but I think I was being paranoid.

actually the concord crash was caused by a piece of metal from a 7#7 that took off before it. Some part of the landing gear came off and i guess got sucked into the engine or something like that.
