The extent of the GTA5 car-stealing bug?

I'm about halfway through the story missions and havent invested a dime into customizing any cars because of what I heard about the cars just dissappearing from peoples garages.

Can somebody fill me in on the extent of the bug? Is saving cars not safe at all currently?
 
Not for me. I appear able to save them in the $30k purchased garages, but the garages associated with my safe house don't hold any vehicle I find anywhere, ever. Also, if I customize a car and then I end up starting a mission or something while I was in it, it has a great chance of disappearing.

At this point if you customize, don't expect to be able to keep the vehicle.

It's really a damn shame, it's quite a major bug, one they definitely knew about, and one that none of the other GTA games had (at least when I played them).
