OK, this latest round of CPU price cuts and introduction of SIS chipset motherboards makes me wonder if waiting for NForce is worth it...

My plan is to build another computer as a Christmas gift for my two boys (13 and 15). Of course, it will be networked so we can use a Broadband router to share the DSL connection....not that we want to play games or anything (damn it's tough being a 40 year old kid).

Anyway I saw the 266/1.4 for $107 and the ECS K7S5A for $65. I also saw the same thing advertised as a combo for less than $200 with a coolermaster fan including shipping (damn, that's alot of power for $200)! I don't care about overclocking, so the K7S5A seems attractive to me. I already have some PC-133 memory and a Voodoo3-3500 laying around for this project.

My question is, since I can wait until October to really get serious about building this machine, should I wait? My plan is to rip out my old MB/CPU and put the new MB/CPU in it's place (Enlight with Asus A7V/Tbird 750). I will then install the A7V/750 in the new case when I get around to buying that (plus the kids will think THEY are getting the new hardware). I don't know what AMD has around the corner, but I don't see myself saving alot of money in that time horizon. The Voodoo3-3500 does fine with the games we play (UT, Falcon 4.0 and other sims). Will the NForce be worth the wait? Buying now vs. later would give me the luxury of time to configure the two machines at my own pace. I may use the A7V/750 early next year to upgrade my parent's K6-500 and use the proceeds from that towards an upgrade? Hmmmm.... I feel a plan hatching!

Just buy now, use AE Blue to pay,
later get price difference back if price drops, or refund it if new stuff comes out.
