Hey guys,

Shameless plug for a game I've been playing off and on for 8 years now. An Awesome Romanesque Text based MUD with a very good combat system. Free 1 month trial at www.skotos.net

UPDATE: 6/16/10 Now you may create 1 character to use for free, paid accounts get more obviously.

Example of a combat situation

Victoriah is stunned.
[Success: 5, Roll: 78] You take a step back. You grip your blade tightly and begin a spinning motion, slashing Victoriah. You successfully twirl your entire body, striking twice! Critical Hit! Deftly, you slice the thigh of Victoriah, Drops of blood mark the ground. She suffers a shallow cut to her right thigh.
Baracchi says to you, "lets see some blood"
You are no longer busy.
Baracchi howls.
Marren says, "oh man"
A shower of blood sprays out from Victoriah's general area.
[Success: 28, Roll: 94] You slash horizontally at Victoriah with the tip of your retalq dagger. Critical Hit! Slash to the neck leaves a lingering arc of blood in the air!

Skill lowers success, defenses raise it.

Not really a PvP game...lots of skillsets... if you want more information about the game please post in this thread and i'll get you started.

Does that dual core 4ghz processor help keep that mud at optimal frame rate?

sounds disgustingly awful to the highest degree imaginable

I seriously threw up in my mouth a little bit when I heard they charge money for such things

In the 8 years you've been playing this, have you tried any free muds? I'd be curious what keeps you playing a pay2play one. And yes I realize you can now get 1 char free, but I assume you've been paying?

A good free one is Realms of Despair.

This. Every mud I've ever played was free. Worst case was they suggested donations, but never enforced it.

ahh, I miss the days...

show playerid "playername"
teleport "playerid" (you are now inside the player's inventory)
look (shows inventory contents, PLUS hidden items including the player's heartbeat)
dest heartbeat
teleport home

Walk away satisfied that the player can no longer do anything because you just "killed" his/her heartbeat timer "thread", so it will never update or allow any commands.

Being a wiz was fun.

Why do people still play text based games? Are you frozen in time, unaware that it is the year 2010?

Why do people post nonsense like this on forums?

Despite owning a gaming quality machine and a 47" HDTV, I do enjoy having a break from Dawn of War 2/Crysis/NFS/Total War and go back to enjoy a game which has kept me captivated for many years, an ASCII RPG which has the depth of BG2 and the difficulty of a game of it's generation.

The question is:

Why do we bump a thread that died a miserable death 2 years ago?

Why do people still read books when there are all these cool movies and videos??!?

Different people like different things, and any given set of tastes and interests do not define some absolute perfection.

Though the question about why this particular Mud is so good is an interesting one. OP?

This Mud is based on ancient roman lore. Although of course it has its own twists. There player base is very open, newcomers coming all the time. The combat is insanely in depth, and the non-combat roles are also equally in depth.

Everything is based off your Stats and your skills which as you saw in the previous blurb involving that fight, is based on a 1d100 roll. Your skill level lowers the success needed..your opponents dodges, agility, weapon blocks etc raise the success.

There are more than 20 in depth skills to learn from hunting (Going out and laying traps for animals..skinning pelts etc) to being a Pickpocket.

You want to be a Constable? Join the recruitment class..you will have powers of arrest, I've been locked away for 5 days real time for villgiliantism from knocking out a lantern thief.

Defend the city against foreign invaders? Join the Legio - learn specially designed skillsets that only Legio officers can learn.

There are several special organizations to join - and many GM run events that make things extremely interesting.

[Success: 5, Roll: 98] Bashing downwards with your black quarterstave, you strike at a thug then step forward quickly to release a side strike before spinning completely around for yet another! Critical Hit! Jolting bash to the left hand. You hear a breaking sound! Firm bash to the right arm. He suffers a bruise to his left arm.

>look thug

You look down at a scummy resident of Iridine's slums. His body is skinny and he bears close-cut brown hair and gray eyes. He is grimy and malodorous. His left hand is mangled. Shards of bone penetrate the flesh of his left hand. His neck has a large bruise.

In short thats all- For the record I've played on and off since 8th grade(?) I'm 26 now! I'd take this any day over Wow and the other spattering of online games at the moment. (However Fall-out MMO/Star Wars MMO for sure will pry me away easily)

No. I was a "wizard" or "wiz" on a mud at one point in time - not a character class but sort of a "god" in loose terms. I was a coder for the game, and as such I was also an admin giving me various powers and such.

Ah, those were the days. I was a very crafty and resourceful admin too. I exploited a loophole to download the mud in its entirety one day. The owner was none too pleased, but actually saw through his fury somewhat and noted my resourcefulness in doing so.

The area I coded was to be grand in scale, and it was for the most part, but it was incomplete in my eyes (literally 1/3 of what I envisioned it to be as the owner of the mud felt I was biting of way more than I could chew as a new wiz). It was also regarded by the players as one of if not the best area on the mud. I'm not sure if it was the attention to detail, the itemization, the items themselves, or the fact that I coded a fully functional pool table into one of the rooms which people loved so much.

But the most fun I had was hanging out and playing practical jokes on other wizzes.
