Your take, really. Personally I believe ES buyers aren't terribly bright to have decided on a glorified Camry with an added premium of near 5 grand, especially now when they're essentially identical from inside out aside from the prettied up interior and leather.

Is there a difference between that and buying $5K worth of accessory crap (bling wheels, seats, etc.) that are *non-oem* and putting it on a Camry if that's what you really want?

You can equip a Camry to the near same amount of luxury as an ES ($33k) if you start with the XLE ($27k). ES is not exactly a smart buy in my opinion, but one is free to do what he/she wishes.

Not quite exactly, but very much so. It has the extra luxurious factor added and thats about it.

The ES at least used to sport a different exterior shell and looked different...and now they're virtually identical to the new Camry. Toyota has gotten lazy at hiding this.

Are you implying that's a bad thing?

if you load up an XLE, it'll cost almost as much as the ES.

and if people want to buy a comfortable car, it's their money. not everyone wants a turbo-charged 2-liter 4WD convertible with 600bhp.

And you would be completely wrong. That 5 grand buys you into the Lexus family and believe me, Lexus takes care of their family. Plus you get a much nicer car than a Camry LXE, not to mention the Lexus shares little with the Toyota. Personally, I think the ES 350 looks a hell of a lot better than the Camry.

Be that as it may, I'd never own a Lexus ES personally. It's not that it's a bad car, it's just not my type of car.

The point is that the car is not based off it's own performance/luxury platform of any sort. It's off the camry, and thats why you shouldnt expect more out of it than it has to offer. You have 'seen' them, but it doesnt sound like you have been behind the wheel of any, if anything. So dont get on my back when i point out valid information. asshat.

Right, and my Contour SVT is based off a lowly budget family sedan, yet other than styling and a subframe the two have nothing at all in common, and their ride characteristics are very very different....just as the Jag X type is based off of the same Mondeo platform..and so on and so fourth...companies have been doing this for years and with certain modifications and component changes you can definately change the way a car will ride...

I highly doubt that the Lexus is part for part identical to that of a camry....thus they are different in their own ways yet they share the same platform...

Not to mention Lexus really isn't targeting the "performance" market with this or even most of their cars, the closest one is what the IS300? ...as others have said people who buy this car typically want a floaty isolated ride, not the boy racer type you get with a 3 series or an A4.

Its called a clue, get one.

Yup, better interior, better exterior build quality, more optional features standard, best in class resale value, I believe most Lexus dealers give free loaners....the toyota is a great car but the difference in the service IMHO is night and day, not saying Toyota service is bad but Lexus really goes the extra mile for their customers as do most luxury brands, barring of course Mercedes who basically give their owners the finger.
