Volkswagen to end production of Beetle, says report
THU June 5 2003 14:30:36 ET

Stuttgart, Germany (dpa) - German car manufacturer Volkswagen plans to cease production of the VW Beetle next month, the Stuttgarter Nachrichten reported in its issue to hit newsstands Friday.

The last VW Beetle will leave the production line in Puebla, Mexico at the end of July, marking the end of a nearly 70-year history and more than 21.5 million cars, the newspaper said.

At present, only 53 Beetles daily are being produced in Puebla. A VW spokesman said the production of the car was nearing the end, but the exact time had yet to be decided.

The last Beetle to be made in Europe left the production lines in Germany in 1978.

Edit: I didn't know the "Old " one was still being produced.

Hmmm. This makes the end of the "old" beetles instantly collectable.

I think they sell the old ones dirt cheap in south america.

Killing the old one rather than the new beetle makes more sense. Ah, my universe has been put right.

Cause people in Mexico, where they're making and selling them, can't afford the new ones.

Correct, and I don't think they can sell them in North Americs, Europe or Japan besause of safety regulations. (Bumper height, 5 MPH crash test, and possibly emissions standards.)

Maybe the very last one produced will be. But I don't see how something that has had 21.5 million of it produced could have any collectable value.

Actually, the problem is just emissions I believe. The old Type 01 Beetle has a aircooled flat 4, mounted rear-engine. Being aircooled, the engine components undergo too much heat expansion and contraction to reliably meet emissions standards. Also, I don't think they ever put any cats on them.

This is very sad... a moment of silence please. :(

I'd rather be a bigoted asshole than have a stretched asshole!! Lighten up dude. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and most guys think the new Beetle is definitley a car for gay people, and I concur.

dude....i wanna buy a 2003 old beetle!!! You can use those engines in so many applications...I wanna build myself a dune buggy!! When the US invaded Afghanistan they took a new faster desert transport buggy along (light frame, light weaponry, zero armor) and its powered by the VW aircooled engine!
