Bummer. Just goes to show that even if you have cool ideas and products, a lack of business savy will put you in the ground every time. :(

I've been predicting their demise for years (search the archives if you must, the posts are there). It is sad for the workers to see the company dwindle so much. But they were just stuck in a business model that people could see was a dead-end. The need for a dozen processor design companies and a dozen video product companies is long gone. The R&D waste having so many companies doing very similar work is just enormous. Simple economics had to win eventually.

I love that. You've "been predicting their demise for years". You're a veritable prophet now! Hey, I've got a prediction too: George H.W. Bush is going to die. And when he does, just remember that you heard it here first!

You forgot to answer these: when and why. Car accident? Disease? Pretzel? All companies either are bought or go out of business. That isn't a prediction. A prediction is why they will be bought or go out of business.

I knew this company was doomed as well way back in 1997.

I used their products back when I was designing Modems at Hayes and saw it was a similiar company as far as the way the SGI execs ran the company.

Okay. George H.W. Bush is going to die because he's human.

Stilll, you predicted that he was going to die. Anyone could do that. Everyone knows that humans die. That is completely unrelated to what I said above. I said SGI was an unnessary company, has a bad business model, has management that is unwilling to adapt, who's products are inferior and overpriced, etc. Thus SGI will die a quick death to be won out by Intel, AMD, ATI, and nVidia. Many posters disagreed, saying that SGI will live forever based on its high-end graphics, great employees, and quality parts. Look what happened in just 3 years since I joined...

That is a world away from predicting that the sun will rise tomorrow.

Okay, I admit defeat. I was trying to make a little joke, really.

A ton of people have been predicting this companies demise for years so dullard's claim is by no means outlandish.

{sniff}...{sniff}

I remember building some early datawarehouses on SGI Onyx boxes (if I remember correctly)...16 processors, each slower than your current desktop - but we thought that was fast back then.

They were a pioneer, and they deserved a better end...so much of what we take for granted now (really dynamic 3D graphics and user interfaces, CGI, etc.) were pioneered by SGI. Their workstations were the tools that a whole generation of other technology was designed upon. And they made some of the very best (at the time) parallel SMP machines for large number crunching and data warehousing.
