The McAuliffe reign has ended in disaster, with the Democratic Party in worse position electorally than when he came in as Chair in February 2001. We have lost seats in the House and Senate, and failed to cleanly take out the Worst President Ever.

While McAuliffe was an artful fundraiser, the party continued to lack the ability to develop a clear message or properly frame the political debate. And it's been killing us.

Even if Kerry can pull off the victory, it's clear the Democratic Party as currently constituted is on its deathbed. It needs reforms, and it needs them now. Quite frankly, the status quo simply won't cut it.

Howard Dean for DNC Chair.

McAuliffe was very ineffective in running a solid campaign for Kerry. He failed to respond quickly enough to the flip-flop charge and it stuck. He failed to address the Swiftboat liars soon enough and that hurt Kerry noticeably in August. Heck, McAuliffe should have discouraged *any* talk about Vietnam.

Mary Beth Cahill should be chased out of town, too.

As for a replacement, Carville's best days are gone and he's too bitter anyway.

Dean would be a good strategist for the DNC and could start having an effect by the 2006 elections.

Dean as head of the DNC? No way....that would be a disaster for the Democratic Party. He would alienate a lot of people......might energize the base....but would drive a lot of the iffy types away. They need someone like John Breaux......

how about Bill Clinton?

definitely not Howard Dean, though.

Why would he want that position?(Clinton) He already runs the party - just doesn't have to do the day to day stuff.

Dean - uhh...nope. He's not a DLC lackey - the powers that be won't let that happen.

Howard Dean considering bid to chair Democratic Party
http://cbsnewyork.com/local/NY...yn/resources_news_html
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) Former presidential candidate Howard Dean is considering a bid to become chairman of the national Democratic Party.

Steve Grossman, himself a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said Dean had told him he was thinking about it.

Dean was traveling today in New York and unavailable for comment. His spokeswoman, Laura Gross, said ``it was far too early to be speculating on that.''

The 240 members of the Democratic National Convention will elect a new chair early next year. Several names are already being mentioned, including former Clinton aide Harold Ickes; Donna Brazile, who ran Al Gore's presidential campaign, and Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack.

Dean has been outspoken since the beginning of his presidential bid in saying that the Democratic Party must establish a separate and unique identity from Republicans.

The next chairman will replace Terry McAuliffe, whose term is ending.
Dean would have made a good President.

Dean was less electable than Kerry...

He never would have made the compromises Kerry did to win as many swing voters.

Kerry gave the Bush campaign too much fuel to their negative campaign bonfire. Dean would not have and is a fiscal conservative and social liberal...more akin to a Libertarian.
