you guys might want to reconsider this whole elite thing, unless you consider elite to mean giving bad advice, cheating the swear censor and starting nef threads then resort to name calling (and quite vulgar name calling) when someone calls them on it. of course some of them decide to use their "elite" status to push others around.

if that's what you guys consider the elite of the forum, i fear for the future of the forum at all. and yes i realize not ALL elite members are like this. but there's enough to make it noticable.

This has been mentioned before. I doubt anything will change.

You can't measure a person's character by their postcount or title. Simple as that.

i don't expect anything to change. rather this thread be deleted. but hey, it was nice to get it out. obviously you or i would not take anyone by post count or title here, but what if you're new? they don't realize around here it's not what you know, it's who you know.

Elites aren't here to set examples.

And Elite doesn't mean jack in OT.

People have their own opinions, and they'll state them. People have their own personalities, and they'll behave accordingly.

Are you trying to make Elite status a burden? Are you saying that all Elites must be careful to censor themselves because they're supposed to set an example?

Well in a way, I think the "Elite" label should be a burden of sorts in that it has be maintained, not just given and forgotten until the end of time. I've read some of the reasons why members were given their elite titles (e.g. contributions to technical support, giving sound/helpful advice, etc.) but haven't seen them contribute in that way since I've joined.

Question for the Mods: Has anyone ever had their elite titles revoked for *any* reason?

fisher: can you provide a link?

Imho, I think elites should set a good example and help the community. What would be the point of the title if they didn't?

Yes.

kinda my belife. I do try and watch myself and set an example of how I want to be treated on the forums but im not going to hold back my opinion, or call it as I see it just because I have a different title, I do my best to give quality feedback on issues and help when I can or have the time, I've moved away from that recently but think about getting back into it. But the title doesn't stop me from calling someone an idiot, when I feel they are being one.

From over the fence, I see alot of bickering about elites and how their treated special, how they get this and their threads arn't locked when such and such is. and IMO its a load of crap, I don't feel I get any special treatment, or special privlage. If I F-up I get banned just like you, if I post a thread that is objectionable it will get locked. its just a darn title, nothing more, a simple word. To some it has sugnificance, to others it doesn't. To me I'm proud to have it, but I don't think any more of myself or any less of people who don't have it because I have it.

He's whining about a thread I started saying the RAP= Retards Attempting Poetry which I meant in a Humorus way. Then I called some dude a name when he accused me of being a racist because of it. I was admonished by the Mods for it so I didn't get away with squat because of my "Elite"Status andf the thread was locked. I swear some of these Nancyboys over in the OT Forum are so sensitive.

I've been giving two vacations in my time here for losing my composure, been warned numerous times and have had threads locked just like the afore mentioned thread.

Many of us who were original members before there was a Forum called Off Topic were given that designation. Afterwards I guess the "Powers that Be" decided to award the members they liked and those who actually contributed that title.

I can assure you that those who were originally given that title sure weren't a bunch of Boy Scouts. The Non Hardware General Forum (what Off Topic was originally called) was a lot rougher and the posts were a lot ruder than what is allowed there now.

Well, I can understand that, and I'd probably do the same. But...

It's obvious that Elites don't get any special benefits. Then why should Elites have any added responsibilities or burdens? It's not some privelege to be bestowed or revoked. It's just a title. I believe that it probably meant a lot more back in the 'old days' before I even heard of AT. The meaning has carried forward, and I generally find Elites to be friendly, knowledgable, and helpful. Most of the time, it's pretty easy to see why somebody earned their Elite status. However, as it does not confer upon them any benefits, being Elite should not mean that they are held to a higher standard.

Presumably, just by being themselves, Elites have earned the respect of their fellow users and the admins. (I doubt that anyone has ever purposefully done or said something in order to try to become Elite. If they did, they'd have to do so for a pretty long time, and then I'd worry about their mental health for putting so much time into 'earning' something so silly.) How can we ask them not to be themselves any longer when they get this little designation below their name? That's not a reward, that's a punishment.

i'm not whining because of you. your little stunt today is what finally made me post about it tho. ornery thread crapping on someone's subwoofer post a ways back is what really made me wonder what this forum has come to. link

it's interesting you call me an OT nancyboy, considering i've been around the forums and this site since it's inception, before there was an OT before there were anandtech forums. but whatever makes you happy. :)

if you can't handle setting an example for the forums you should not be ELITE. you guys post about all the nefs, who do you think encourages them? how are you going to ban someone for neffing or using the st word when you've got this being posted by an "elite" member.

so yeah, if you want the tag, you bear the burden of being an example for everyone else. live with it.

there's a difference between stating your opinion and starting a nef thread that's going to start a flame war, then using vulgar language to flame folks you knowingly incited.
