Wouldn't it need to be in order to work well on consoles? I don't see how a MMO is supposed to work on console, is the microphone supposed to replace the keyboard for communicating with other players? Cause that'll just get obnoxious. I could see a basic game working on consoles, but nothing very intricate like raid boss mechanics in WoW.

The way it was explained in the Gamespot video was that console players would have a wheel of dialogue choices to interact in lieu of a keyboard.

Kind of limiting but I'm not sure if there is a better alternative in a console environment.

Haha, so you'll know if you have a console player in your group because they'll always use canned statements?

A lot of people use voice, so it might not matter for raiding and other group activities.

I thought they said that PC/Mac wouldn't be playing alongside console players?

I don't have any consoles so the chat thing won't effect me, but I'm somebody who hates voice chat with people I don't know. If it is a group of friends or friends-of-friends, it is cool but too many whiny kids out there to chance the company of strangers.

Well I wasn't able to catch the video before it was taken down but I'm really interested to see how they'll make this work.

How will they balance the number of abilities per character to overcome the keybind limitation? Just from the top of my head, I remember having around 7~ abilities to use on boss fights with 2~ reactionary 'oh shit' buttons in WoW. That's not including potions and whatnot.

Of course number of abilities doesn't equate with difficulty, but it does add flavor to have different combination of abilities to use in a fight. I think GW2 has it pretty decently with an 8 ability system with a decent mix of dmg/utility.

Or the targeting system? Will it controller users be limited to the equivalent of tab targeting? Would there be a way to 'mouse over' a target for quick taunt/heal?

If it's supposed to be released on consoles, I know where the wind is blowing, and I am sure I will not be getting it. Doing this most probably means simplifying the gameplay past acceptable point - from PC RPG player's perspective.

Whats the ETA on this?

I mean Everquest Next has its official unveiling on August 2 and SOE has said that it will be out by the end of 2013.

I always wanted a PS3 MMORPG, but I have yet to find any that are decently playable.

The only successful cross platform (PC, PS2, later 360) MMO I know of is FFXI, and it was certainly not simple.

I watched the Quakecon gameplay presentation by Bethesda. Here is a link that is time-stamped to where the action begins, or close to it: http://www.twitch.tv/bethesda/b/439743009?t=40m49s.

The reaction of the crowd seemed pretty muted, overall, given that this is obviously a huge title from a blockbuster publisher/dev team. From what I saw the in-game environment looked pretty good, although the loading and character creation screens were pretty rough. Over all it seemed like what you would expect from injecting the ES lore into a wow-like world. The one dungeon they showed must have been instanced, given the way the party flowed through it. The combat seemed pretty satisfying, though it remains to be seen how FPS-style targeting mechanics work in party play. I don't know if they have friendly fire. I just started playing Darkfall, which does, but I don't have enough experience yet to know whether the FPS mechanic works well in group action.

Based on what I saw I would give it a try, but I didn't see anything that really stood out as different in terms of the basic game style, and maybe that's what was behind the somewhat subdued response from the crowd.

Did anyone else watch it and not like that red glowy effect that marks enemy mobs?
