Learned about the last one in a Social Psych course I took last year. Very interesting. They build primitive replicas of old cargo planes and related stuff hoping that ACTUAL cargo planes will see them and land... bringing them supplies and exotic goodies. The "priests" and various influential members of the cult wear all sorts of military/flight regalia such as discarded uniforms, medals, etc, etc.

That last one is hilarious.

I saw some people from the Raëlism cult give a presentation at school. It was pretty bizarre to say the least.

My friend also claims to have walked into a bar for this cult or a similar cult somewhere in Northern Wisconsin, and a person there claimed to be "The One."

I've found my next travel destination. Tanna, Vanuatu. I will become their new god.

I feel kinda bad for the last group. At the very least they seem harmless & not completely retarded.

See, I'm thinking it was much easier to recruit the weak minded 2,000 years ago than it is now...which is probably how christianity came about.

She would lead them after death to a planet which was said to orbit around the star Sirius, but in order to do so they would have to die in a fire, as was prophesied for the end of the world.

And every other religion...

A religion isn't automatically a cult.

9 results for: cult
1. a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
3. the object of such devotion.
4. a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.
5. Sociology. a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols.
By this definition, a religion is a cult. Some of these "crazy cults" aren't that much different from catholicism and Christianity, and sometimes atheists think catholics and Christians are as crazy as they are.

Like someone above said, at least they're not trying to kill people, especially for stupid reasons.

Of course, you left this out:

a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader.

the members of such a religion or sect.

any system for treating human sickness that originated by a person usually claiming to have sole insight into the nature of disease, and that employs methods regarded as unorthodox or unscientific.

The first one there is the most commonly accepted definition of a cult, when used in the context of this thread.

A cult is a cult, especially by definition. I left out the ones that didn't apply to most modern religions for a reason. Like I said, by definition, a religion is also a cult, which is what bdude was saying.

No, that isn't what he was saying, but thanks for at least trying to comprehend.

If I'm missing something that you have brilliantly picked up on, I'd love to hear it.

The topic was about crazy cults, genius. I pointed out two additional ones, and then he blatantly adds in every religion even though they don't fit.
