I am in the midst of a college presentation.

And I have to find a post 9/11 artifact that can answer a list of questions.

One thing is "Cause and Effect"

the artifact I have decided to go with is the Memorial Quilt (the one that travels around the nation) and we all know what the Cause was for this .. sadly.

Anyways - I was looking for more Effects of post 9/11

Ones I thought of:

1. "rally around the flag" type actions of Americans

2. The flag symbol all over major networks

3. political leaders - celebrities wore flag pins on their suits (and still do)

4. Online slowness of the morning of 9/11 (Google)

5. Econ damage

6. Actual mental problems

7. Anxiety (goes with mental problems)

8. depression

9. scared to fly

10. Americans feel for revenge - war - killing

11. Race problems - Muslim attacks went up

12. Communities had a connection to each other - helped each other - NY had a "warmth" feeling

13. More Religious Connections - finding or reconnecting with God(s)

14. Patriot Act

15. Homeland Security

16. War on Afghanistan

17. War on Iraq

18. Civil Liberties limited

As you see I have a few

and I thought it would be quite interesting to see what the ATOT folk thought was effected by 9/11

it can be anything! :)

Thanks

Well, my finances went to hell as did my emotions. I lost 3/4 of my clients in 2 weeks because of the attacks (a couple were based in the WTC, others had to cut costs from their own side effects).

Things are finally starting to turn around for me now, but it was really scarey for a while.

The most dramatic effects of 9/11 were pretty obvious but often overlooked - the internet lit up like an f'ing christmas tree, and every TV in the damned country was locked to one of a half dozen channels, Cartoon Network and MTV be damned. Those two things say a LOT.

1) Increased psudeo-patriotism
2) Economy -> Shitter
3) People afraid of something completely irrational and statistically unlikely (see my post about the girl who though Iraq was bombing us). If your intent is to save lives, ban somking or something along the lines.
4) Little increase in actual domestic security from what I can tell

Really didn't affect me that much.

i dont know how much this applied to others, but I felt, along with many people i know, that the general actions of new yorkers was warmer. people were more willing to help out and there was a more compassionate feel around the city. hard to put into words, but this lasted for a few months afterward.

The end of the post cold war period in the sense that Americans no longer judged the world safe anymore, they felt very vulnerable and felt a need to boost the defense budgets and especially for "homeland security". We've also seen bills like the "Patriot" Act being passed that limits civil liberties, the arrest of thousand of people that were suspected of being terrorists, helping them or harboring them. We've seen two wars (Afghanistan and Iraq) which will change the world for the next couple of years.

The post 9/11 period will probably remembered as the period in which America decided to flex her muscles to show the world that they were serious about their security, even though they didn't always think about the long term consequences of their acts...

Not so much a College mindset...

No? You mean the thousands of people that cleaned up, planned, are rebuilding, and are visiting the site have noticed no changes? This is more tangible than your "mental problems, anxiety, and depression". Unless by "College mindset" you meant predictable.
