The Earth is closest to the Sun in Jan. Must suck for the Southern Hemisphere?

http://www.cso.caltech.edu/outreach/log/NIGHT_DAY/elliptical.htm

the earth's orbit is elliptical. it is closest to the sun in jan and furthest in july.
the earth's axis is also tilted.

i assume that's great if you're in the northern hemisphere (ie: USA/Europe).
warmer winters and cooler summers.

must suck for the southern hemisphere? ie: south America and Africa
they have summer in jan because the earth is tilted? must be hotter than summer in USA in July?

I think the biggest problem with living in the southern hemisphere is that you're living in the southern hemisphere. Everyone knows that the northern hemisphere is the best one.

Do you ever just open up google earth and just set the earth a spinning and just you know just watch it spin? Spin, spin, spin.

Heh. It's a good thing that has virtually no impact on weather compared to axial tilt.

what do you mean distance from the sun has no impact?

in jan, we furthest away.

why/how does axis tilt give a bigger impact?

There is less than a 3% difference between the maximum and minimum distances. It has no meaningful impact.

Wait what? I thought the Earth was closest to the sun in summer?

No, not in the Northern Hemisphere summer. It's warmer in the summer because the sun's rays shine further north in the summer, not because we're closer to the sun. Northern Hemisphere summer, earth is actually father away from the sun, compared to Northern Hemisphere winter.
