Admit it, you clicked on this thread because you have a dirty, dirty mind. Well, Mr. Smuthead, this thread is about a simple way to open your door in urban areas so you don't off the cyclist trying to bring Chinese food to your neighbor down the street.

The Dutch Reach: A No-Tech Way to Save Bicyclists’ Lives
This simple change in the way you get out of your car can save lives — of cyclists, drivers and passengers. Here’s how to do it, and why it’s so effective.

I just check my mirrors. Especially in an urban environment like the cartoon. *What kind of fool just throws their door open in traffic?

*I bet all kinds of fools do based on what I see around, but I have carrots in the fridge with more sense than the typical driver.

The law says you can't open your door until it's safe to do so. No reach around required.

I am a cyclist myself and sometimes forgot to do it while driving. It's not a natural reaction for most American drivers. In the past I've definitely been distracted and neglected to do it while getting out of my car with a big bag of groceries or if I'm running late. All it took was one cyclist to yell at me and I have always looked behind me ever since.

What exactly is this cartoon is trying to depict? Look over your shoulder before opening the door?

you're not wrong...but the point is that if you train yourself to do it with the right/non-door arm, then it is only ever safer. It's weird how a few seconds make all the difference.
I mean, who knows--this could actually save you noble country folk from saving Hank Williams Jr's life, just out for a pleasant US route stroll on his riding lawnmower, because it's the only motorize transport that he is stil legally allowed to operate...despite the fact that he is clearly still so pleasantly drunk.

Think about the options: Is there nothing worse than getting sent up to State because YOU opened the door on the multi-count felon? It's an easy god-damn decision.

Science!

sorta: the message/rule is to check your door with the opposite arm, not the American, left arm. It's just about delaying your reaction, making it easier to cancel if you have a cyclist bearing down.

....but missed in this cartoon is the simple fact that this kind of rule/behavior is absolutely necessary in Amsterdam and most of metro Holland. Much of DT and OT Amsterdam is limited to bikes only

Doesn't do a whole lot of good unless you attempt to see what is coming up in the lane adjacent to you. Left arm, right arm, delayed or not.

Bicyclists should be on the sidewalk. Duh.

Also, I can't tell wtf that guy is doing in that car. Very bad 'how to'.
