This is a crazy story that made me completely facepalm.

The Professor, the Bikini Model and the Suitcase Full of Trouble

A world-renowned physicist meets a gorgeous model online. They plan their perfect life together.
But first, she asks, would he be so kind as to deliver a special package to her?

Also, I swear this is relevant to the story!

Pics of Denise Milani (NSFW)

I recommend reading the story, but if you are lazy here are cliffs in spoiler tags.

1. Paul Frampton, a 68 year old divorced physicist, is looking for a wife that he can have a child with.
2. He meets someone on an online dating site who says she is Denise Milani.
3. He chats with her online for about two months, she says she loves him but won't talk on the phone.
4. Milani gives Frampton a ticket to come meet her in Bolivia where she is doing a photo shoot.
5. Frampton arrives in Bolivia, but Milani says she has been called away to Brussels.
6. Milani gives him a ticket to Buenos Aires with a promise for a connection to Brussels, but asks that he bring a bag that she forgot.
7. Frampton speaks to a friend about what he is doing, who immediately warns him he is being scammed into smuggling drugs.
8. Frampton ignores the warning, takes the suitcase and makes it into Buenos Aires OK.
9. Frampton gets tired of waiting for the ticket to Brussels and tries to head back to the states, still in possession of the suitcase.
10. Frampton gets arrested for possession of drugs trying to leave Buenos Aires and is thrown into a ratty Argentinian prison.
11. Frampton is convicted of drug smuggling and won't be released until May 2014.

There are even more weird twists than I've summarized here, but you'll have to read the article.

Great read, thanks. I wondered whether to go to spoilers or read, glad I read first

I think the guy is a pathological liar, it's part of his weird brain makeup

reading the full story makes me think it isn't the full truth.
Nice reading though.

Yea I thought it was very well written, with the twist towards the end about the texts, but the writer just seemed to be relaying what he is being told from multiple sources, rather than doing a lot of independent investigating. Anyhow I think it's more of an entertainment piece than investigative journalism

Even if he knew about the drugs, he is still unbelievably stupid to think that the risk is worth it and that he could get away with it.

Come on, a professor like him has to earn a decent salary. He has a cushy job where he is well respected - why do this?

Plus, he is smart enough to calculate the odds of getting away with it - not good.

I think he knew something was up, but was really, really naive. He probably knew there were drugs in the bag, but thought this would be his chance with that girl.

What's missing for me is how quickly he went broke when the University cut his salary. Tenured professors make good money usually at big universities. He should have a big nest egg.

Maybe that was part of the motivation?

Maybe. I also don't get using him as a mark. I guess I'm not in the drug smuggling business so I couldn't say, but if I had $400,000 (assuming these guys had done this at least once before) I'd probably just rent my own plane and equipment to get the stuff in to Euorpe another way

I think the big timers bring it in through West Africa on private planes across the Atlantic

has the real denise milani commented on this story?

From the article:
The real Denise Milani was never accused of having a role in the drug smuggling and has no connection to Frampton. “The only real connection we have is through the international media,” Frampton admitted. Milani, who was interviewed for The Daily Mail, expressed alarm about having her name associated with drug smugglers, fear for herself, her 12-year-old son and “sympathy” for the professor. “I feel sympathy for her, too,” Frampton said. (Despite repeated attempts, Milani could not be reached for comment.)

I just can't believe this guy had 0 savings at 68 or whatever his age was... that shows his level of common sense.

may 2014 is a slap on the wrist!

Keep in mind that his travel started at the beginning of 2012, so he's been held since then, and the time he was awaiting trial counts against his sentence (which was halved because he's a foreigner who could be expelled from the country).
