The dual Xeon beast lives *PICS!*

Congrats! I just finished my dualie too, and am blown away! These 1.6 lv's are amazing. I'm at 2.8GHz with the stock intel wind tunnels. Granted, it is a little loud, but not too bad. I wanted to get performance, but stay on a budget. I did the u-wire mod to get to 1.55 on the Vcore and am running the machine at 14 x 200fsb, so memory is 1:1. My mem timings are 2.5,3,3,6.

The dvd and grfx card were carryovers, and the setup cost me <$600. I love it!

I wanted a duallie too, but my dual MP1800+ was just not cutting it gaming wise 🙁

dual Opteron for me eventually. 🙂

For what you paid for those CPUs that is just simply outstanding :beer:

Here's a typical scenario. You've got email, IM, 5 IE windows and something else open. You want to leave them open. You decide to play a game. If you have one CPU, the OS will share your single CPUs power amongst all those apps you have open AND the game.

In a dual CPU rig, one CPU will run all the aforementioned apps and another CPU will run the game.

^^Now, that's not 100% completely true; i.e. 100% of 100% of the already open processes will only run off "this CPU" but it's close enough for the purposes of this thread. 🙂 Suffice to say, system respossiveness, even at only 200MHz more than I'm used to, is awesome. :beer:

This is true when those apps are actually using the CPU, but I often have Outlook, Firefox, irc, AIM, Sysmetrix, 2 instances of CoolMon, Winamp, and Windows Explorer open while I play a game on single CPU system. I don't notice any difference if I play the game with all the other apps closed. The only time I notice it is if I play a RAM hungry game like Call of Duty, but then that's RAM holding me back, not my lack of a second CPU. 😉

If I were encoding video while playing a game, I'd really notice it (the encoding wouldn't slow down).

Thanks much for the good words. :beer:🙂 I'll be loading up F@H tonight or tomorrow....depends on when I feel like fiddling w/it. 🙂 It's running great; no probs at all.

@TREVOR2K,

How did you get to 2.8GHz?????? What mods did you do? What FSB jumpers do you have set on the mobo? What multi/FSB are you using? I should be able to hit 2.8GHz as well.

ps
Is it a STABLE overclock? I ran P95TT for almost 17 hours w/no warnings or errors.

Some day I wish to build a dual machine, consisting of dual xeon 3.6GHz processors, 4GB of DDR2 memory...And that's just the beginning!! 😉

I will be using for video editing with Avid and graphics with Illustrator and Photoshop. Any suggestions on what else I would need for it. BTW, I'm envious of all of you. I'm stuck with just a 2.0GHz celeron processor for all my work and it's failling me extremelly well!! 🙁

I ran SETI@home on my Dual MP1800+ 😀

Are you suggesting that I switch to AMD's Opterons??? I want to stay with Intel because I am famillar with their cpus.[/quote]

how are you "familiar"?

it's just a CPU... Intel and AMD both work the same way... one is just a better value 😉

I agree on the Opteron vs. Xeon scorecard. I originally wanted to build a dual Opteron. Top of the line Opterons and Xeons are currently competitively priced....and priced clean out of my price range! :eek;

Opterons require ECC/Buffered memory, which carries a hefty premium over it's non-ECC counterpart. However, someone spending almost $2K on CPUs ALONE is not worried about another $500 premimum for the memory. I paid $120 for BOTH of these CPUs and reused my regular PC3200 memory. I'm livin' large on a budget, baby! 😀 2.4GHz/533FSB Xeons are currently $225/each.

Everybodys doing it. Intels are hotter, slower, use more power. If seriously interested in dually you need to register at 2cpu and ask the experts/

Yup. That's where I got ALL my info for this build; over at 2CPU forums.

I do have to disagree with the "Everyone's doing it" comment. Not everyone is doing it b/c they can't afford it.

Most folks are getting the lower-clocked Xeons and OCing the snot out of them.

Most 2.4GHz Xeons are hitting 3.2GHz on air with a few simple mods. Many hit 3.6GHz on air. Usually the U-wire voltage increase trick is necessary.. These mods are dangerous if not done exactly correct and a lot of people aren't willing to risk it. To those who dare though, the conquerors, go the spoils!!!! :beer:😀

😀 looks like I'm going to have to assimilate some more crunchers into my fleet now eh?, current stats show me as passing you in a little over a week.

AMD's are generally better for gaming, where as I am not planning on using the machine totally for gaming but video editing. The NLE's ALWAYS use intel over AMD. Anyway I ask them over at 2cpu.com too.

Thanks 🙂

Wow, beautiful setup. Love the massive sinks, passive is a dream. Man, that is one rig; how much for the entire setup? ;Drool;

I'm loading up four instances of those big WUs tonight.
