Did you know that it takes approximately 2.74 fortnights to format a 160GB drive? Well it does, and it's making me bored.

*dum dee dum dumm dumm*

So... how are all of you? Good I hope?

...unless you're NOT an idiot (*ahem*) and you use that 160GB to backup the 120GB of data that's important to you.

Because 160gb is neary impossible to fully backup. ;)

im doing good, thanks.

why dont you spilt it into partitions, then format like a ~10 gig partition for windows, and then you can be up and running on that, and then overnight you can format the other ~150 gigs for data/backup/etc.

i formatted and 80 gig the other day and i swear it took like 2 hours. normally i wouldn't care because i format in win2k usually, which runs in the background while i nef, but this was a new system install. still, can't beat 80 gigs for $90. anyone remember when $0.10 a MB was a great price?

All in one partition? Hope your OS isn't on it, otherwise a freeze and reboot will be one long scandisk screen.

Did you know Windows XP can do a quick format on a bare, never been partitioned HD?

Kinda cool.

Looks like HD speed doesn't correlate with its size, he-he. I mean, if you got one drive with 40GB/platter that's 20GB in size and the same generation drive of 80Gb, their speeds are essentially the same, but it takes so much longer for the bigger drive to format, defrag and run scandisk.

A lot of you are expressing concerns about my hard drive activities. Let me lay out exactly what I'm doing.

Currently, I have 30GB, 40GB, and 80GB drives. My system(boot) is on the 30, my important data is on the 40, and I backup onto the 80.
I am shifting everything down with this new drive, making it: system on the 40GB, data on the 80GB, and backup on the 160GB.

All throughout this process, each drive's contents will exist on at least one(1) other drive. There will be no loss of data on my watch.

And that long scandisk isn't going to happen with Windows XP.

[edit] And I know I can just quickformat it (Viper), but the teeny, tiny assurance of good working order that a full format gives me just feels so right.

[edit2] BTW, make sure you visit my TOTAL WEBBASITE! :D

It's funnier if you know that I call it a "webbasite" because of a friend's crazy chem teacher.
He had a CompSci teacher that threw in extra letters, too, but at the worst times, "update the data" became "uppadayta da data".

heh, wait until you ever low-level format that devil, pack a lunch...and dinner. I waited 4 hours for my Maxtor 40GIG during a low-level format, finally got tired and went to bed.

No kiddin'. I like to run SpinRite on new drives I get, but on this drive that could easily take several days.

If your formating it, I asume that the drive is empty.
Buy a 20 gig hard drive for your os and xp can reformat a 160 gb hard drive in a few minutes.
It takes less than a minute to reformat my 120 gb drive.
(I capture allot of music videos)

If your formating from Dos, buy a good book!
