Lol. Like the music if you want, but that statement is just patently absurd. His lyrics are like crappy middle-school "poetry".

Anyway, last comment for this thread; don't want to threadcrap, I just really dislike The Doors and could not hold my tongue.

The Doors weren't to my taste, either (although I enjoyed reading "No One Here Gets Out Alive"). But I think you're being too hard on his lyrics. And just in general you have to give them credit for originality. They at least couldn't be accused of sounding like any other band of the time, and to build a success on sounding so different is some kind of notable achievement, imo.

I enjoyed the Doors both at the time and since. They had a unique sound and, more importantly for me, encapsulated a particular time and perspective.

Exactly!

They had a few great song and others that were just OK.

There's clearly a line between those of us old enough to remember them when the Lizard King was still alive and those that matured in the 90's or later. Not sure exactly where the line is but suspect it to be when Grunge died - about 1993ish.

Rock had a decent run at the top, from late 50's to early 90's, but Rock is mostly dead and most under 35 could give a sh1t.

Doors are one of my top 10 bands of all time, maybe even top 5 (not really put much thought into a list). Some of you dont know good music if you listened to it :p

Yeah, I'd say the same. Definitely top 10, possibly top 5.

Not all music appeals to all people, but when I meet someone who says they actually dislike The Doors, I feel as though there's probably something wrong with that person.

Funny, because I've always found the opposite to be true. :hmm:

It's not liking the band, I like all kinds of shit bands, it's the over the top adoration and placing them in the pantheon of great bands which makes no sense to me. There are a lot of bands I'm not really a fan enough but can still understand why people rank them so highly, The Doors do not come close to falling into that category.

That's where Ed Sullivan banned them from ever being on his show again because they didn't change the lyrics like he wanted them to. It was too racy for those times.

what was controversial about the lyrics? i thought in the 60s anything goes.
Not on TV. It was a weird standard for decency. In the movies, anything goes; on radio it seemed to be totally random as to what got beeped or silenced (Gloria, for example, was played straight up). On TV, women could shake it in mini-dresses but Bob and Janice and Ricky and Lucy slept in separate beds.

Good quality video of Jim Morrison and The Doors playing LIGHT MY FIRE on Ed Sullivans show in 1967!!

Is anyone here lucky enough to have seen this ON TV in analog??

I saw them.

Ed Sullivan was the hot show back then.

I also remember seeing the Beatles, the Dave Clark 5, Elvis, The Rolling Stones.

I don't remember seeing the Doors but certainly the Beatles and the Stones. Ed Sullivan was watched by many, many households. Of course with three channels at the most available, Ed did have a good chance of getting viewers. :D It wasn't until much later in life that I realized how I should have paid a lot more attention to the Stones. They made some pretty amazing music. Of course when Hendrix came on the scene, I was pretty much blown away with what he was doing. I sometimes wonder what he'd be doing now had he lived. I wonder what direction would his music have taken. He'd be 72 now.

I'm a big Hendrix fan. IIRC, he was interested in jazz at the time of his death. I have trouble wrapping my head him and jazz music, but h3ll I bet it was pretty cool.

The Doors are what they are because of the way everything works together. Morrison's vocals and lyrics, the bluesy rock, the Vox Continental. Beyond that it was also the timing; The Doors were out at the forefront of what was going on in music.

I can't remember if I saw it. but there was a chance I did. Ed Sullivan was a big show back then, when there were only three channels. I do remember the Beatles.

The Doors aren't one of my favorite bands, but I do like a lot of their stuff. Their sound was woven into the 60's. Listen to The End. They don't make music like that anymore.
