Dollar Coin is Back!

Its nice to know some topics can still get bipartisan support. The idea of raising money by printing a coin that you think people will save is an interesting one. And since it has all the presidents on it, it might encourage people to learn a little something about their presidents.

this is cool
After the 50 State series launched in the late 1990s, the government discovered that an astonishing number of people were collecting each new quarter as it rolled out of the U.S. Mint, taking the pieces out of circulation.

It costs the Mint less than five cents for each 25-cent piece it produces. So in a process called seigniorage, the government makes money whenever someone "buys" a coin then chooses not to spend it.

The Treasury estimates that it has earned about $5 billion in seigniorage profits from the quarters so far.

I'm sorry but I detest this idea on one single principle: the idea behind creating a dollar coin was previously "because they're cheaper to make and last longer, so in the end it would save the treasury money over printing one dollar paper bills"

We spent the time, effort, and money on the Sacagawea dollar coin and I liked it alot. But what we never did was STOP PRINTING THE EFFING DOLLAR BILL! Until we stop printing the damn things, we'll never realize the cost savings and the public will never switch over to the dollar coin for commerce.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :)

After a few decades of really boring coinage of the presidents and buildings variety, I've been happy with new initiatives like the state quarters program. We used to have such beautiful coinage, as you can see from online encyclopedias like http://www.coinfacts.com/

I say put native americans on the coins.

Our college has an interesting statue of sacagawea in our quad area. She looks over the approach to the main campus building. Dare to be bold.

The Buffalo Nickels are coming soon.

How about a coin to remind people to save then environment.

This idea is a long time coming. Ive thought they should do it since the did the state quarters. They used to change currency designs alot until the early 1900s, now its only rarely.

I have no issues with a dollar coin, we've had one and two dollar coins for a while.
Personally i don't like change, but at the same time i don't like a massive wallet full of relatively worthless bills.
I like my one and two dollar coins, drop them in a change bucket every day and every year getting a bonus couple hundred bucks in change :)

I still have $200 dollars of the Sacagawea coinf and $200 of the $2 bills they made a while back.

LOL, are they worth anything yet or did I make a bad investment (as ususal)?

Yes because everyone should save a little environment, preferably in a jar with a tight lid and no holes.

Hmm, this is a START. But I thinking that we should replace the paper money with silver or gold! For silver currency.. 5, 10, 20
For gold 50, 100, 500, 1000 :)
I hate paper money, it's pretty much worthless the only value it has is that most people trust it but in itself, just paper that came from a tree
Their would be no jewlery store if gold or silver is used so in the name of greed and possession, it will never happen in our lifetime. Jewlery = ripoff

Psst, american money didn't come from a tree, it came from a bush. US currency is printed on a blended paper with the majority fiber coming from cotton which grows on a bush (well it can grow on a tree but have you ever heard of picking cotton trees?)

It'll never fly, you can't fold it up and stick it in a G-string.

Maybe they ought to make 25 cent bills.

You can't snort coke through it either.

The thing is, money is highly valued so it must be silver and gold.
Why spent paper money, like we're kids? It's kind of silly. This no different then your inkjet paper inked with colors and numbers
You just don't get it yet, not everyone has cash in their pockets right? so it is nothing more then a symbol of money. so if backed by paper it is worthless, they can then sell gold, silver for a lot more then it's worth.

I say, good for you.
I really had to get used to the huge amount of bills in my wallet when i started spending my vacations in the USA.

btw, why do all of your bills look so much alike?
