The DOCSIS mystery

I have a DOCSIS cablemodem, and I've been wondering for a while now why is it so hard to find information about this standard. While the cable company can do all sorts of "big brothering" into your modem, the box is still a mystery to me. All I know is that it's there, it's connected, and it works.

Have you tried looking the cablemodem.com and docsis.org documents? It's way too technical (for me, at least) and I couldn't understand almost nothing in it.

What I'm trying to do is open the box (even if it's pandora's) and look what's inside. I know my cable company can comunicate with my modem (probably using SNMP), but I can't. I'd like to know a little more about what's happening there, just as I like to know what Windows is doing under the hood...

What do you know about it?

Put a router bettwen ur pc and the modem (hardware firewall), install soft firewall (zonealarm) and you should be fine!

All I konw is that cable modem converts data to unused TV channel frequency.

same goes for DSL box

I wasn't talking about that. I was talking about knowing how it really, the inside stuff, how can it be configured, is there any tweaking you can do? This kind of stuff...

And, Docsis is really not a big deal. It was just a standard for the broadband companies to follow. Before Docsis, most companies were using propreitory means of providing broadband, Docsis was meant to standardize it.

Speedguide teacher you to tweak your Windows settings, not your modem. Where we stand now, we can't even query the modem to know what firmware is installed, for example. One more question: how speed control is done by the cable company? Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

Cable modems are still an unopened black box. I have this feeling it will be very interesting to know what's inside.

If you actually went to speedguide you would have found out this has been hashed over and over and over again.
