The DMV is boring and slow.

Minnesota has pretty much everything but DL renewals, title transfers and new vehicle registration online, so I only actually have to go every few years.

When I do, I drive out to one in the suburbs without much of a line.

My experiences at my fair DMV have been pretty good. Slowness can be attributed to stupid customers taking way too much time to get their crap together, specifically old people, really old people. If one can't find hear one's number called, can't find window #6, doesn't have dexterity to fill out the forms, and is pissy all the time shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a steering wheel. That and the folks with four DUIs explaining to the clerk that they just have to get their license back after the judge said, "nopers".

Having spent hours waiting at my local CA DMV, I can attribute much of the slowness to ineffective, indifferent workers. It's like the DMV hires all those that are too incompetent to be hired in the private sector in some sort of perverse affirmative action program for the otherwise unemployable.

The employees here have all been quite nice and seemed efficient during the times I was at a DMV. Other people in my close circle have said the same. *Shrug*

Have you been the DMV in California though?

If you can get an appointment in less than two weeks, California DMVs consider that a win.

And the cherry on top is that I have to pay more in registration fees than I do for my insurance on a exotic sports car!

2 weeks is fair but once you hit a month and up they should hire more people and extend hours while planning to open more locations. How long does it take to get your business done once you get into the DMV?

For a standard 4 door sedan in NJ registration is like 50 bucks a year or so. How much is yearly registration in California?

On average, it's more than three hours wait time according to the DMV blog.

For my 1995 Maxima, it was $234 last year. The car is worth like $500.

That is such a regressive tax. I thought California was supposed to be progressives

Here in North Carolina it was real quick and easy to register the car down here and get plates for it. However, it was about a 1 to 1 1/2 hour wait at the DMV License Bureau ... Some forms to fill out and they do a quick eye check.

I am impressed with NV DMV in Las Vegas. Made appointment. Walked to desk, gave them last 4 of cell and took a seat. Bench did not get warm before my number was called. It took 40 minutes to get drivers license, register to vote, title and get plates for car. I even got to pick a plate number from a pile of plates.

Coming from CA, I am totally impressed. Ok, I said that already. :)

Definitely thought you were referring to the DC metro area since I know you're in NOVA.
