The Disappearing partition

Alright i just made myself an extra partition for a clean install of xp to run Doom3 on. After creating the partition and installing xp i decided it was a little too small and used Partition Magic 8 to take a little space off my WinME partiition and add it to the new xp partition. Halfway through the operation windows crashes so i reboot and try again. Again, halfway through the operation it crashes. Next i try to boot into safemode and give it a shot but it won't boot my primary xp partition into safe mode so i boot into WinMe, install PM8 and complete the operation successfully. I reboot into my Primary xp partition in normal mode with no problems only now my Me partition isn't showing up under my computer. When i open Partition Magic it does show the partition as ME (*: )(ME is the volume label) but has no drive letter attatched to it.
So...

The Me partition IS bootable and seems to have no other issues only i can't see it under xp,

and

My primary xp partition will no longer boot into safe mode but otherwise seems perfectly fine.

???

erm...

you realize that winme is a piece of crap, right? make a partition to stick all your data onto and then format the whole thing (expect your data partition)

Yes i do. I use it to play a handful of old games that don't run well under xp. As far as formatting, fugetaboutit. It's taken me three months to install all my software. Hopefully i won't be doing another complete install for atleast six months.

By the way, winme sucks but so does xp.:D

What games don't work with XP?

Have you tried XP's O/S compatibility modes?

LOL, the OS isn't the problem here, it's Partition Magic. There is a reason we don't let you mess with your system partition size you know...

Anyway, if you search the support.microsoft.com site for a tool called MPS Reports, download and run the Setup/Perf version of the tool. Send me the sector inspector output from that (if you can't find it, just send the entire cab file) to my handle @ gmail.com and I'll see if it's something I can fix easily for you or not.

Some older games like Messiah and Driver among others.

I really don't want to try any compatability modes.

As far as whether it's the os or PM i really don't care. It's not really causing any problems, more than anything i'm just curious about what would cause it to do this. You must work for MS Sianath, i've come to this conclusion as you don't yet know what the problem is and yet you're already denying that it's microsofts fault. Lol. :D

Wow that's a hell of a tool. I might take you up on that offer but i want to have a look at the output for myself first. Thanks.

Edit: Ok, i don't see a sector inspector file and there is waaay too much information there for me to just be handing it out to someone i don't know before i know exactly what they contain. No offense intended. Any other suggestions?
The only files i see offhand that might possibly be useful are USER_DISKINFO.TXT & USER_diskmap.txt
both of which are small enough that i could paste here(if they could be of any use).

Hi Perry404 --

The information contained in there has no password information or other security information in it. It does have lots of driver information and hardware information, plus your event logs, but that's really about it. Not a whole lot of private stuff. Microsoft uses the tool on tens of thousands of machines.

I agree with S. on the laying of the blame - this software screwed up the partitions; that's not good.

He can fix the problem, given the chance. :)

Thanks dclive. I'm sure you're right about it being PMs fault. After all i wouldn't have the problem if i hadn't been using it. On the other hand my machine would be pretty boring as well. Instead of having drives c, d, e, f, g, h, i, k, l & m to deal with i'd only have drives c: & d and what fun would that be.
:D

I wasn't at work when I posted that, but the file name I'm looking for is FTDMPNT.TXT. It shows the MBR and Bootsector information for all attached physical disks.

As dclive pointed out, that tool is the first step in anything we do because it gathers all the basic diagnostic information you don't want us to call you every 15 minutes to ask for. I completely understand not being comfortable sending it out without knowing what's in it, so by all means, dig through it! What you'll find is it's log files, event logs, installed drivers, driver versions, running processes, disk information, etc. All the tools used to gather the data (if it's not built into the OS) you'll find sitting in the bin directory.

:)

According to you, the problem is "When i open Partition Magic it does show the partition as ME (*: )(ME is the volume label) but has no drive letter attatched to it." Let me know if that's changed since your first post. ;)

Sent a reply to you. :)

Let me know if you want me to break it down and do the highlighting thing for you... I've got it all ready to go, but I won't send it unless you want it.

Lol  I expected such a response. Disk 0 are my games that i specifically keep seperate for the reasons that you now know.:D Disk 1 are my experiments in chaos. It's likely that i will keep things as they are as it's not causing me any grief at this point but i would be interested in having a look at your highlights. You can now thank god that all MS users aren't like me. :D

Thanks again.
