I ran into a site; thedirty.com.

At first, I couldn't understand what it was exactly. I thought it was a site about local skanks and trash in Las Vegas. But, as I searched through the site a bit more, I realized it's just an entertainment site.

There is a 20/20 clip (can't link to it; the site is blocked and so is youtube), and the owner/creator of the site has this MO;
- allow people to post pictures, names and whatever "facts" they want about any person
- said owner/creator does not look into the allegations/warnings posted
- said owner/creator mocks any attempts by the victims to clear their name
- said owner/creator believes there is no way to prove or disprove if anything on his site is true or not

As I continued to sift through this site, it hit me. Some of these are probably planted by "Nik" (thedirty's master). He could have found someone's open photobucket gallery, made up a name, location and story about them. The sensationalized gossip most likely prompted many people to find anyone they despise and post pics and stories about them as well.

Anyway, my point; is this what internet entertainment has come to? Ytmnd, 4chan and even forums are all about buffoonery. This however, may hit someone pretty hard. Especially since there is no governance or even a care to check the stories - the site thrives on inaccurate & unfounded information; will prospective employers conducting back ground checks know this?

Worse yet - assholes who claim they will fix and correct your e-reputation will use sites like thedirty to further scare those who just don't "get it". Your e-reputation is in your own hands frankly; making sure no false LinkedIn or facebook profiles about you are up. But, sites like this are new forms of adults cyber bullying adults.
