Big publishers have completed taken control.

Just look at the fuss the Battlefield community is throwing the general direction of EA, and they are entirely correct.
Publishers are completely micromanaging the development teams, dictating every detail. It's all about trying to out-do the other big publishers, gain market dominance in any given segment (obviously the goal is to own every segment... ugh).

The gaming industry used to be a solid success in terms of financials, but now, the market has grown exponentially, and we continue to grab grab grab every major AAA title... and the overall market shows a complete willingness to subscribe to a yearly release calendar for some genres, and the publishers are pushing with all their might to get everyone and their grandma to buy each successive release.

I know this is a RavenSEAL post, but....are you drunk? Can you read that out loud to yourself and does it make the slightest bit of sense?

So stop buying mainstream games from major publishers. Play indie games instead. You'll save money, and you'll also have something different to play other than "Generic Military Shooter #17".

Also sober up a little.

i hate the fact that we see more and more games out there that are made for monkeys. no hardness in them and some simple buttons and that's all...

In other words, the gaming industry has become exactly like the movie and music industries.

I play a lot more indie games now thanks to the big publishers telling me what I should play. And you know what? I have a lot of fun with these $2-3 purchases.

Yea, I'm not too happy with the mainstream gaming industry ... many of the games are very linear and tend to follow a formula, but thankfully there's still developers out there who won't let the big publishers push them around too much...

I just wish some indie developer would come in and meet the need for a non ADD paced military shooter, one that has huge maps and stuff like the BF series used to have. There have been some attempts such as Nuclear Dawn but nothing that really and truly, uh, "nails it".

Heroes and Generals looks promising (no idea if the developer is indie) but is a ways off.

One problem in the shooter genre is that the tendency of the big devs is to make the game centered on stats and/or unlocks instead of gameplay and tactics and strategy. I really wish a big name dev or indie would take the first step towards disconnecting from KDR and either eliminating stats and unlocks or at least limiting the stats to wins/losses/total points for ranks and teamwork stats only.

On the other hand, if Orcs Must Die had more DLC, I'd play that too.

Actually, Orcs Must DIe's gameplay could make for an interesting multiplayer shooter.
