The Dine and Dash...

I had 2 friends dine and dash today and my buddies and I ended up picking up the tab after the manager freaked out on us. He said that he was calling the cops (not sure if he really did). I was just tired of waiting there so I paid the remainder of the bill. Plus I really like the billards place so I didn't want to get banned or anything.

So what is the law behind that? IF the cops did come... what would they do, or what could they do?

EDIT:

Came on one bill, but separated by person.

What is the extent of the law on this?

your friends are idiots..

I don't know the law but I assume it's considering stealing, petty theft or something like that. Usually that kind of behavior forces the person serving you to pick up the tab.

What the hell do you think they'd do?

They'd ask who your friends were. If you didn't play nicely and give them names/addresses/phone numbers, they'd take you down to the station to sweat you out until they could call your parents (I'm assuming you're a teenager since your friends did this kind of crap) who would yell at you until you gave them their names.

By the way, kick your friends in the balls when you see them next.

Well, one guy was in from out of town and I only knew him through another girl. The out of towner, and his friend were the ones who dined and dashed.

They have the authority to do that even though I paid for my own stuff, and the server acknoledged that I did that?

Yeah,

Your "buddy" left you holding the bag. You may have a case if you had specifically asked for separate cheques, but even then it's pretty chintzy to try to get out of paying.

The law doesn't really matter here; you have to pick up the tab as a matter of class.

Due to excessive alcohol consumption, I have walked out on tabs a few times. Each time, a buddy has picked it up with no questions, usually not even looking for a payback. I've picked up many a tab myself in the same situation.

Maybe I just have good friends.

two seperate bills, or all on one?

That makes a big difference. If it was one bill and you paid part of it then it is unlikely that any crime was commettid. Once the place takes partial payment the issue becomes a civil matter and not a criminal one.

IF the bill was seperate then the police would ask you for the names of the other people. If you don't tell them then your ass is going to jail on obstruction of justice charges.

Thank god for Oregon law that forbids the server picking up the tab of customers who skip out.

No kidding! They are supposed to let you know their plans so you can dash with 'em!

Find new friends...next it will be banks, with you holding the bag too?
If you hang with this crowd, you will get everything you deserve! I might as well scare you while your young. 🙂
