I'm looking to buy one, slap some money down and do some wireless surfing.. what the difference between them. besides price?

Advantage to paying that much more for the VX?

Thanks

Only the case.
OS Version is the same (3.5).
Watch out for the new Palm VIIx for wireless Internet connectivity...

The Palm VX is a lot sleeker and lighter than the IIIxe....fits pockets better too. Functionality is the same though. You are only paying for the redesigned case.

If you want wireless surfing, then you ought to look at the VII instead.

Dont look at the VII unless you want to be stuck on palm.net service. Omnisky offers more and better service.

I've played around with the omnisky and the palm v, and it's great. However, I dont know if the 40 bucks a month is worth such a luxury... just to read short news clippings. Great for the frequent traveler or commuter, but probably not worth it for the occasional palm surfer.

Also, the modem will set you back about $300.

Palm Vx - No expansion port, looks nice but expensive. 8 Mb
Palm IIIxe - No expansion port. Good price. 8 Mb
Palm VIIx - don't even think about it.

Visor Deluxe - Has expansion port, slightly older Palm OS (like a cross between 3.1 and 3.3), and 8 Mb. Good price. See my sig for more info on the Visor.

Buddha, I dunno where you got that bit about the IIIxe expansion port. If you're talking about the Hotsync connector, the Vx and the IIIxe both have it, but the design is different so accessories made for one won't fit the other. If you want the most compatibility for add-ons overall, probably the IIIxe is the best, although some of the more expensive accessories end up showing up for the Vx first. If you want the most versatility, go for the Visor Deluxe, since the expansion port is quickly becoming supported by many developers. The biggest reason I like the Visor Deluxe is because you can buy a backup module for it. Contrary to popular belief, all of these machines can crash (but less than Windows CE machines), and sometimes it takes all your data with it. It's OK, if you're always near your main computer, but otherwise you're SOL if your Palm goes down.

The V series has rechargeable batteries as well that are recharged when the unit is on the docking station. Can be a good (never travel, always use docked) or bad (taking docking station on travel) thing. But, the Palm series have always had a leg up on WinCE devices in terms of battery usage.

Regarding the Omnisky modem.

It seems to work well in NY and SF but had problems with it in Dallas.

A major problem with the Palm OS in general is that it is 16 bit. Because of it, Omnisky said they would never be able to problem push technology for the Palm until a 32 bit OS comes out. So if you really want your email, you are going to have to log on the Omnisky network and check each time. It will not get pushed out to you like with RIMM and pager devices.
