The difference between Model 6 and Model 8? (AMD XP)

I was looking at the CPU-supported list for my ASUS A7A266 board and it lists various AMD XP chips as being supported. I currently use an AMD XP1500+ which is listed as Model 6. The highest clocked Model 6 CPU is an XP2100+ which I was originally going to get until ASUS came out with a new BIOS revision (1012.001) that allowed the board to take in Model 8 CPUs clocked as high as XP2600+.

So my question is, what is the difference between Model 6 and Model 8? A blind guess says Model 6 is the Palomino Core and Model 8 is the T-bred Core (while Model 10 is the new Barton core). However, my knowledge in CPU's is quite limited so can someone shine some light into this matter? Thanks! 😀

So what's the difference between T-bred Stepping 0 and 1 (A and B respectively).

In the end, as long as I have the right BIOS revision, it won't matter which "Model" AMD XP CPU I go with, correct? 🙂

Thanks!

yeah

the difference lies in the overclocking ability for the most part (the difference that REALLY matters anyways)

other than that, all they did was add a few layers to the core

tbred a overclocks maxed out around 1.8-1.9
tbred b overclocks max out around 2-2.3 depending on the cpu

Well my motherboard sucks when it comes to FSB overclocking. I take it I'm just better off getting Stepping 0 (T-Bred A) since I have no intention of doing the "pencil trick".

All T-Breds are already unlocked from the factory. You don't need any pencil trick. And also, T-Bred 'A' and 'B' are the same price, everything depends on your luck if you get A or B.
