The desire to be mainstream?

I know someone who seems to strive to be as average as possible -

her favorite music is whatever the top-40 station is playing at the moment.

she sees movies like "the house bunny" and calls critics snobs

Her favorite tv shows are exactly whatever's popular now.

I try to recommend music to her, or lend her dvds and she refuses to give anything a chance, assuming that it's awful if she hasn't heard of it.

Now, I'm not a snob and I watch american idol and really dig a good goofy comedy (and some mainstream musicians are mainstreams because of talent, u2, etc.)... People who hate everything mainstream are equally annoying, but at least they seem to be striving to be "DIFFERENT" and special and elite. As snobby as that is, I get the desire to be special. but some people seem to try very hard to embrace everything popular - what's with the desire to be mediocre?

Self-esteem issues.

She wants to blend into the world by embracing only pop culture rather than 'stand out' by liking something that may not be popular.

How old is she?

i think if people are mediocre, they feel they will fit in with more people thus, making them feel as if they have more friends.

Well, I find it frustrating - she's related to me and I wish she had that intellectual curiosity - the desire to at least attempt to try things beyond a certain comfort level.

Perhaps she will grow out of it, perhaps she wont. That behavior is typical of high school/college girls who don't want to stand out or have their own identity for fear of being outcast from the social norm. There's really nothing you can do for her close mindedness though, that's something she will have to figure out on her own.

Follow-up question: Does she have a clique she's always hanging out with? That could be the source of the issue; not wanting to enjoy something that would alienate herself from said clique.

It's almost as bad as the ones who try to be anti-mainstream.
Ones that refuse to listen to "popular" music and listen to obsure stuff they found on Youtube, won't go to "popular" movies and only see independent and foreign films nobody else has heard of, and has to disagree with anyones opinion about anything that is considered "normal" and have to go on and on about how they are SO different and how nobody can possibly understand them or the things they like.
For example, people that don't own TVs and have to tell everyone (at least once a year). Yeah, so what, good for you. To me, they are the bigger losers.
Thos people are WAY more annoying than ones that simply like what's popular.

yeah. humans are generally a social animal. it's only natural that most people conform. in fact if everyone were non-conformist, we might not have a stable society.
