The Debate Question Not Asked

Bob Shieffer didn't ask a single question on the environment or on energy policy, two issues that will have profound effects on our future. Television news has carefully avoided, covering Kerry's speeches on the environment, too. The "boring" excuse doesn't fly. Survival is the most natural of all interests.

Caring for the environment means less time spent indulging in wants and desires, and people don't like that.

Ofcourse they didn't talk about Energy - because kerry and edwards haven't shown up in the senate to give the two votes needed to break the filibuster so they can vote on an Energy bill.

Well, they covered those topics in the townhall debate. Remember Bush's hydrogen car and that he's a "steward of the land?"

I do remember, but I'd hardly call it "covered." Kerry had 90 seconds to talk about the environment, but he spent more than half of it rebutting one of Bush's distortions on the previous question. (I thought Kerry could have given a better answer.) Environmental policies set during the next four years will have a profound effect on millions of lives for decades to come, so I think they deserve at least one question in a 90-minute debate on domestic issues. Look at some of the rehashes and softballs that got asked instead.

Could it be because we're basically fvcked, our way of life is changing fundamentally & all the laws congress tries to pass won't make much of a difference?

Dude, the Energy Company bill manages to screw consumers/taxpayers, extend our dependency on foreign energy sources, AND ruin the environment. The Repugs cannot get 60 votes b/c the legislation sux.

Oh, "steward of the land". Interesting. That must be tearing down mountains litterally for strip mining.

Actually, I put energy and environment in front of terrorism. All 3 very important topics, but it almost seams like terrorists are simply distracting us from the rest of our world.

Something has to be done to promote alternative energy.

you are correct in noting how little coverage it gets.
which is odd, because watching the town hall debate it was obvious that this is an issue that matters to people.

I don't think it reflects the interest of americans on the environment. I do , however, believe it indicates that there are a few other looming interests that dwarf the environment in comparison.

It could have easily garnered a minute or two more but frankly, the war has coopted other typical campaign issues.

DING. Energy prices are about to skyrocket due to increased demand. The Republicans are dealing with it by invading oil-producing countries - the Democrats are pushing conservation. Joe Fatass may not want to hear that we are killing people in the Middle East right now so he can afford to drive his SUV - but he sure doesn't want anyone telling him to get out and walk either. Niether party can win this election by being straight with us.
