The Death of the G Rating for Kids' Movies?

With fewer kids' movies now having a G rating, does anyone think that the G rating could die soon? Notably, the new My Little Pony movie just got rated PG. I'm not sure if this is to accommodate the Bronies, but this is very interesting.

I think producers try age the content along with the viewing audience. If show or movie keeps trying to target the same age group it has to win over a new viewers every year. In some cases it makes more sense to mature the content so it keeps pace with the audience it has already hooked. To me it seems like there is still plenty of G content out there but it's mostly direct to video stuff for digital streaming. The profits on a G movie are probably so slim that it makes sense to skip the theaters and disks all together.

I did not know of these Bronies. I have been enlightened.

Considering kids can turn on the boob tube and watch near NC17 material without parental intervention does it matter?

Looked it up so far this year there have been 2 G rated movies, 30 PG, 65 PG 13, and 80 R rated movies this year.
Last year only 5 G movies for the entire year but 2 were re-releases of old movies, 2 were IMAX documentary stile movies and the other was not a major release.

So looks like G is dead.

G Movies are stupid anyways, the only way you can dumb a movie down THAT much is if there is no real story line, conflicts, etc.... You might as well watch 6 year old cartoons.

When it comes to movie's, they are trying to get people into a theater. Why take your infant child to a movie if there is absolutely nothing that can entertain you? Disney movies have always done it spot on where the kid is entertained, and the story is good enough for adults - with the occasional pun that only the adults will get. If you target just the kids, goodluck getting parents to come out and pay $15 each for something they are going to fall asleep during.

G is a box office killer these days, it might as well be an X. Even movies that could and should be rated G voluntarily go for PG-13 because G turns off teens and adults.

I think producers are incorporating more 'adult' themes into their movies (hence the PG rating) to keep parents from offing themselves while having to endure these movies.

That's just my assumption.

Shaun the Sheep is a good movie. [spelling corrected, the rest is still wrong apparently]

Saying a movie can't be good and G-rated is silly.

Movie producers being some of the most insane people gambling with large amounts of money... well, whatever way the wind blows is going to guide them if they think they'll be able to keep their jobs.

.

You lose. It was rated PG. A movie can be G rated as still be good, but even a good G movie has trouble at the box office. So the SHAUN The Sheep movie tossed in a couple of butt jokes and took the PG rating intentionally.

I'll be damned.

Now I question the MPAA... because that's absurd. And sorry about the misspelling.

Fern Gully had what felt like a solid half hour of Robin Williams vamping, and still was rated G. (I'd love to have heard what ended up on the editing room floor.)

Frankly, I think the movies are as innocent as ever - the ratings have just gotten stricter. Ghostbusters II was PG. A View to Kill was PG. Real Genius was PG. There's no fucking way family-friendly schlock like New in Town, The Ultimate Gift, or The Resurrection of Gavin Stone should be PG.

Meanwhile, the TV censors have gotten a lot more permissive, seems like.
