Hey, mass pron download and no fun are mutually exclusive statements.

But I agree. Similar uproar with XP, I installed it on a friend's PC they only made sure I had only 1 copy installed at a time (which I do/did). I won't be the first to upgrade Vista and will watch implementation, but I think MS is just trying to give cause just in case of extreme piracy (which seems common at times). You spend all this time worrying and in the end if there's nothing from it you've wasted all that worry time. Even if there is cause, what are you going to do about it? Sue MS? EULA aside, I wouldn't recommend being the first to upgrade anyway.

Call ms, give them key, indian looks up information, says "youve transferred your license twice, i cannot help you" and hangs up, you cuss and go buy a new copy of Vista, because THATS THE WAY IT WORKS NOW!

yeah so you've bought vista already and have even activated it twice ? -_-
cool man.

every generation of consoles when they are released they ALWAYS, ALWAYS say that its the end of PC gaming...the truth is, nothing beats an online experience with a mouse and keyboard, not to mention in "HD" which PC games have been running in for years ahead of these consoles!

Hardware requirements have always been increasing. Such is the nature of technology. But to say that they've increased exponentionally is wrong. Show me a game that came out October of '04, then Oct '05, and then take Gothic3 or NWN or Dark Messiah for '06 and show me that they've increased exponentially.

You will soon be hearing about the better game performance with 4 GIGS of memory under Vista. That's right. 4 Gigs will soon be the new "standard".

Define "soon". Everything is relative. Does soon mean sometime in 2007? Cuz I don't buy it. If it's longer than that, it ain't soon. I think you can count on one hand how many games have listed a minimum requirement of 1GB ram.

Games (Alan Wake) that won't run on less than a dual core CPU.(And still run crappy unless you have a Quad core).

Again, don't believe the hype spit out by marketing flunkies at an Intel developers conference for a game published by Microsoft. Alan Wake will run on a single-core machine. They are requiring Vista though. But I'm sure that's more of a strong-arm selling point for Vista than it is an issue with XP or DX9 holding it back.

The biggest problem I see with hardware requirements for games is that when they list minimum requirements that are so far below realistic that it's ridiculous to even attempt to play it with such a machine unless playing at 640x480 with everything on low.

As a final note about system requirements-- NWN2 is coming out in just a few weeks. I'll have it running on my LAN with 3 machines. The fastest is an A64 3000+ x1900xtx and the slowest is a 1.2ghz Tualatin 5900ultra. A machine built in '99 (granted, upgraded several times over the years) is still running the latest games (even Oblivion on low).

NWN is a bad example :p

It runs on Intel EXTREEM GRAPHIX fine :D

I don't agree with many of the things this guy is saying. Not all game are going to require DX10. The generation after this one of GPUs should be more efficient. You could probobly call microsoft about the upgrade problem if you really wanted to. Was XP this demanding on hardware when it came out?

I know many of you remember when XP came out people all moaned and bitched about what a system hog it was. I remember people saying 98 and ME were faster in games and general performance and they were not going to switch.

I need to take screenshots of this topic so I actually have evidence for the next O.S. Microsoft puts out after Vista. We will go through the same thing about how the next O.S. is such a hog and Vista is much faster.

You're probobly right. Do you even have XP on that machine?

While I can understand the whole "everyone bitched about XP when it came out cause it was a system hog and worse gaming performance" thing, did Microsoft have XP only games when that launched? As it stands now, 2 games that I know of (Alan Wake and Halo) are going to be Vista only. Is every new game that MS comes out with from now on going to be Vista only? And yes it seems every new OS doubles the memory requirements, but each one gets proportionally larger. 256MB to 512MB was double but still only an increase of 256MB. Now the increase is 2 Gigabytes for the optimum 4 Gigs for Vista. So the next OS after Vista is going to run "best" with 8 Gigabytes?

I did'nt get Windows Teletubbies version XP until just this year and only because I could'nt install Oblivion on W2Kpro. Moral of story is don't upgrade until you have the need to. No one is forcing Vista on you ....most if not all the future games will work with XP (and W2K mind you) and even lower end hardware than you got already for many years to come... developers would be crazy to make games that only run on Vista and only with 1000W PSU's, 4GB ram and two video cards. Just wait it out..buy what you need.

My next OS is linux anyway. Too much BS with MS and entering licence numbers for everything HDCP..etc over the years... If I have to give up some games so be it. There's lots of other avenues to play.

I don't PC Gaming will ever die. And a lot of people lamblasting the article didn't read it. Consoles are barely mentioned, and it isn't stating that consoles are killing PC Gaming. Its more like PC Gaming is commiting suicide.

I do think the triple threat he was talking about, of overheating crazy power consuming video cards, bloated useless Vista and the coming DX10 scism have a real potential to crash the PC Gaming market. Frankly, I'm looking forward to it if it does happen. Everything I've heard lately on technology seems to be us moving in the wrong direction. What rises from the ashes would pretty much have to be better.

For now, I've decided that I'm off the upgrade train. I'm just going to play HL2 mods on my box and focus on my other hobbies. I'm tired of the cost and hassle factor sky rocketing while the fun factor continues to remain stagnant.

Btw, Oblivion runs fine on Win2K and I believe it was actually added to the supported OS section. :p
